Provide Real Reproductive Health Care Coverage for Low-Income Women

Target: Tommy Thompson, HHS Secretary; George W. Bush, President
Sponsored by: NARAL Pro-Choice America

On January 31, the Department of Health and Human Services proposed making embryos eligible for government-funded insurance under the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The proposal is the latest ploy in the Bush Administration’s ongoing stealth campaign to have government make abortions illegal. The proposal demonstrates the Administration’s commitment to the strategy of undermining a woman’s right to choose by ascribing legal rights to embryos.

Anti-choice, anti-family planning officials are driving the President's health care policy. This CHIP announcement is not a serious health care proposal. If it were, it would include low-income women as recipients for comprehensive health care.

Sign the petition below to tell the President and HHS Secretary Thompson that you oppose the extension of the CHIP program to embryos and to call on them to provide comprehensive health care, including prenatal care, to low-income women.

deadline: 2-15-2004

We, the undersigned, oppose the Administration’s proposal to extend the CHIP program to embryos. Instead, we urge you to provide comprehensive health coverage to low-income women. This coverage would enhance women’s ability to determine when and whether to raise a family and would provide them with the prenatal care needed to support a healthy pregnancy.

We signed the “Provide Real Reproductive Health Care Coverage for Low-Income Women” petition!

because every child deserves a chance, and women that are low income are women. There is a story about Patricia Bath, a minority woman, poor, but supported by her low income family, she is now one of the leaders in eye care and laser technology. The children of today or the US of tomorrow.

I feel that a woman should have the right to make their own decisions on abortion issues.

To accord an embryo rights to health care before according those rights to the woman carrying the embryo is just crazy. Every pregnant woman should be guaranteed health care. We've already figured that out in New York.

I am a mother of three grown children and three grandchildren and never thought of getting an abortion, however, I feel a woman's right to choose is the most important issue for a woman and her right to independence!!! Who gave me or anyone else the right to dictate to another woman what she should do!!! This should be a very personal decision made by a woman and only her. With the PROPER EDUCATION there would be less need for abortions. The government should have nothing to do with this kind of decision and if it were a man's decision they would never be involved.

Women need safe ways to terminate a pregnancy. There will always be a way, and her death due to an unsafe abortion would be truly senseless. An embryo or zygote should not have rights that override the woman's.

if anyone has seen "The Cider House Rules" then you understand that being told no is only as effective when there are no, AND I MEAN NO other options. A coat hanger my hurt, but if the woman wants it, she'll do it. If choice is taken away, a black market, underground ring of operations will take shape. And mark my word, it will be a negative stigma placed forever on America.

I think the woman is more important than the embryo. It is her body. End of story.

embryo & zygotes are not as important as the poor woman, young woman, the developing mature woman. No going back to diminished rights for women, we have been recognized as valued people, bettering the world, not criminals.

I am concerned that the present administration is using the fetus as a way of doing away with Roe v.Wade. I am also concerned that low-income women are often not provided contraceptive coverage.

The government needs to step back from womens reproductive issues.with all the real problems in the world today an attack on women should be the least of their worries.Granted there are always going to be people who abuse the rights that are given to them, that goes without saying, and that is very unfortunate. but isnt this supposed to be America.. Land of the Free and Home of the Brave. Aren't women still considered American citizens? The issue should'nt be about if women are raped and/or molested.the issue at hand is a womans right to control what happens with her own body and life, regardless of the circumstances under which she may have become impregnated. There is however,a need for more reproductive and sex education, and of course education on birth control and protection from disease.Programs designed to show and teach young girls about pregnacy and parenting and how abortion should not be thought of as a form of birth control, are desperately needed and better health care for low income women is needed, but stripping a woman of her bodily rights and her right to make her own decisions concerning her body would be an abomination. I am a mother of a darling little girl. I am a mother by CHOICE.
