Don't Let Idaho Kill Endangered Wolves

Target: Fish and Wildlife Service
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife
Hundreds of wolves are at risk in Idaho, where in 2001 legislators passed a measure calling for the elimination of wolves "by any means necessary." The State has recently asked for permission to kill up to 75% of the wolves within the Lolo District of Clearwater National Forest and in an area where they are now protected as an endangered species. And, they want to repeat the slaughter in the Lolo District every year for the next five years.

Most unsettling is that Idaho would like to kill 3 out of 4 wolves regardless of the wolves' history of interaction with humans and livestock. That means that wolves that have never done anything to harm livestock or people could be killed.

Once hunted, trapped and poisoned to extinction in Idaho, wolves have made a remarkable recovery. An estimated 512 wolves, including 36 breeding packs, are a critical part of Idaho's ecosystems. And, contrary to anti-wolf extremists' claims, the wolves are not a significant threat to livestock or game populations.

Help us stop anti-wolf extremists and save the wolves – Urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife to deny Idaho's request to kill wolves.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is accepting public comments through August 6th, 2007 on a new plan could allow more than half the wolves in Idaho and Wyoming to be killed. Please sign this new petition to submit your official comment now!
As a dedicated conservationist, I strongly urge the Fish and Wildlife Service to reject the state of Idaho's request to kill wolves in the Lolo Elk management zone of the Clearwater Basin and in the area north of I-90, where gray wolves are still protected under the Endangered Species Act.

Gray wolves are an important part of Idaho's ecosystems, and contrary to anti-wolf extremists, are not a significant threat to livestock or game populations. Studies show that habitat loss has had a far greater effect on elk numbers than the reintroduction of wolves to Idaho.

These are not responsible management practices. I strongly encourage you to deny unfounded requests to kill wolves.

Thank you for considering my comments.

Wolves should remain a protected species, as they are a vital part of our ecosystems. Wolves have been misunderstood for years throughout our history. Persons in Idaho should educate themselves on these noble animals and then learn alternate means of coexisting with them in nature. There are livestock-protective alternatives to slaughtering these important creatures of God.

Each living being has a specific purpose on the earth, mostly to live and be the best being that they can be. The wolves are a majestic animal, and I believe that fear is driving this request. They are an intrinsic part of our ecosystem, they should be left alone.

I strongly feel that taking such actions would bring many regrettable problems. I feel this way due to the fact that wolves play an important role in nature and their presence enhances native biodiversity and healthy ecosystems. The fact is that Wolves have not played a large role in the depletion of game. Despite rumors that wolves are depleting elk and deer for game hunting, data from Idaho Department of Fish and Game shows that as the wolf population has steadily increased since 2003, so has the hunter harvest success rate. According to IDFG statistics, hunter harvest numbers for elk go up and down from year to year, but the overall success rate has remained relatively consistent since before wolves were reintroduced. For example, data shows that in 2005, the most recent year we have statistics for, hunter harvest numbers are higher than they were in 1993, two years before the wolves were ever reintroduced. Most importantly, IDFG statistics verify that elk and deer populations are at ecologically sustainable numbers, and wolves account for less than 10 percent of all elk and deer deaths in Idaho. Source: Idaho Fish and Game PDF File. This is just one point to look at and there are many more. I find that it would be in your best interest to put a stop to this unreasonable campaign. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this message.

I am an Idaho native and travel back home frequently. I can't imagine Idaho without the natural beauty of the wildlife that inhabit our great state. Please consider alternatives, and find ways to protect our wolves!

Theres absolutely no reason of why performing such cruelty, another measure can be taken where the preservation and non violence can be practice.

Wolves are part of nature's food chain. By doing so you are killing off part of that food chain which could destroy an entire Eco-system. So think before you act. Killing them is not the answer

This is absolutely horrendous. Wolves are amazing creatures and do not deserve to be slaughtered. What especially horrified me was that they'd harm ones that haven't even done anything wrong. Cant you seem the massive injustice in that?
