Don't Let Idaho Kill Endangered Wolves

Target: Fish and Wildlife Service
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife
Hundreds of wolves are at risk in Idaho, where in 2001 legislators passed a measure calling for the elimination of wolves "by any means necessary." The State has recently asked for permission to kill up to 75% of the wolves within the Lolo District of Clearwater National Forest and in an area where they are now protected as an endangered species. And, they want to repeat the slaughter in the Lolo District every year for the next five years.

Most unsettling is that Idaho would like to kill 3 out of 4 wolves regardless of the wolves' history of interaction with humans and livestock. That means that wolves that have never done anything to harm livestock or people could be killed.

Once hunted, trapped and poisoned to extinction in Idaho, wolves have made a remarkable recovery. An estimated 512 wolves, including 36 breeding packs, are a critical part of Idaho's ecosystems. And, contrary to anti-wolf extremists' claims, the wolves are not a significant threat to livestock or game populations.

Help us stop anti-wolf extremists and save the wolves – Urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife to deny Idaho's request to kill wolves.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is accepting public comments through August 6th, 2007 on a new plan could allow more than half the wolves in Idaho and Wyoming to be killed. Please sign this new petition to submit your official comment now!
As a dedicated conservationist, I strongly urge the Fish and Wildlife Service to reject the state of Idaho's request to kill wolves in the Lolo Elk management zone of the Clearwater Basin and in the area north of I-90, where gray wolves are still protected under the Endangered Species Act.

Gray wolves are an important part of Idaho's ecosystems, and contrary to anti-wolf extremists, are not a significant threat to livestock or game populations. Studies show that habitat loss has had a far greater effect on elk numbers than the reintroduction of wolves to Idaho.

These are not responsible management practices. I strongly encourage you to deny unfounded requests to kill wolves.

Thank you for considering my comments.

It is our job to protect wolves now that there are more of them. Why else did we put them on the threatened list but to help their populations grow? We need to show that we are an intelligent society and that we can live peaceably together with our wild canine friends.

Please deny Idaho's request. Their plan will make wolves extinct. We've already driven too many species into extinction or near-extinction. If we stopped developing the land that animals live on we wouldn't need to worry about eliminating them.

The movement to kill 75% of the wolves sounds like big business, not conservation. Do not let business interests dictate conservation efforts.

Please deny Idaho's request and protect the wolves in the Lolo District of Clearwater National Forest. There is no reason to slaughter 75% of these beautiful endangered animals.

When you interfere with predators you unbalance nature. Please leave the wolves alone and try range riders if you are concerned with domestic kills. That has worked in Montana and Wyoming. Contact The Predator Defence Alliance.

PLEASE deny this outrageous request. With humans taking over more and more wildlife habitat, it's unconscionable that men would want to undertake mass exterminations like this. We already are driving so many species to extinction. We need to protect this important species, and implement creative and humane ways to resolve conflicts between wolves and livestock.

This killing is senseless and a tragic loss of our natural environment that is dwindling to where nothing will be left but concrete, houses, and maybe oil fields.

Please do the right thing & deny Idaho's inhumane & unreasonable request!!!!!!

The thought of these magnificent creatures suffering a horrible death is unthinkable! Wolves are very important in the ecosystem and are not a threat to livestock or humans. They prey on those too sick or weak to survive in the wild, keeping deer/elk populations healthy. If anything can be blamed for reduction of game populations, it is man himself.

PLEASE DENY THE REQUEST TO KILL OFF THE WOLVES IN THE FOREST. THESE CREATURES TAKE A LONG TIME TO REPOPULATE AND ALTHOUGH YOU MAY THINK IT'S A GOOD THING, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THESE ANIMALS HELP THE NATURAL HABITAT IN SO MANY WAYS. PLEASE DO NOT VOTE TO HAVE THESE ANIMALS KILLED.

End the inhumane slaughter. We as human beings must take responsibility and protect our animals, not destroy them.

Wolves are a part of the natural checks and balances. To destroy them is to upset nature even more. There is no excuse for wholesale slaughter of the wolves.

It is beyond my understanding why there is this driving need to kill wolves. Where in the world does that sort of bloodlust come from. I think it is one of the things holding people back from real civilization. Our relationship with wolves needs to be one of humans allowing wolves to live free according to the way they have evolved. I know some people are very jealous of the freedom of the wolves, particularly fat, moderately retarded, middle-aged male politicians in their midlife crisis, who want to win the support of gun enthusiasts who are addicted to killing and morbidly fascinated with animal death. SAVE THE WOLVES FOR ALL GENERATIONS TO ADMIRE. PERMIT THEM TO LIVE!!!

As an Outward Bound participant for many years in the Idaho Primative Area I find this attempt to kill 75% of wolves offensive. Even th sound of the wolf call was a blessing. Cull if you must, but a killing rate of 75% is murder!!!
