Don't Let Idaho Kill Endangered Wolves

Target: Fish and Wildlife Service
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund
Hundreds of wolves are at risk in Idaho, where in 2001 legislators passed a measure calling for the elimination of wolves "by any means necessary." The State has recently asked for permission to kill up to 75% of the wolves within the Lolo District of Clearwater National Forest and in an area where they are now protected as an endangered species. And, they want to repeat the slaughter in the Lolo District every year for the next five years.

Most unsettling is that Idaho would like to kill 3 out of 4 wolves regardless of the wolves' history of interaction with humans and livestock. That means that wolves that have never done anything to harm livestock or people could be killed.

Once hunted, trapped and poisoned to extinction in Idaho, wolves have made a remarkable recovery. An estimated 512 wolves, including 36 breeding packs, are a critical part of Idaho's ecosystems. And, contrary to anti-wolf extremists' claims, the wolves are not a significant threat to livestock or game populations.

Help us stop anti-wolf extremists and save the wolves – Urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife to deny Idaho's request to kill wolves.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is accepting public comments through August 6th, 2007 on a new plan could allow more than half the wolves in Idaho and Wyoming to be killed. Please sign this new petition to submit your official comment now!
As a dedicated conservationist, I strongly urge the Fish and Wildlife Service to reject the state of Idaho's request to kill wolves in the Lolo Elk management zone of the Clearwater Basin and in the area north of I-90, where gray wolves are still protected under the Endangered Species Act.

Gray wolves are an important part of Idaho's ecosystems, and contrary to anti-wolf extremists, are not a significant threat to livestock or game populations. Studies show that habitat loss has had a far greater effect on elk numbers than the reintroduction of wolves to Idaho.

These are not responsible management practices. I strongly encourage you to deny unfounded requests to kill wolves.

Thank you for considering my comments.

Thanks for taking this petition into consideration when deciding the fate of these wolves, who are just as much a part of America as the humans who live here.

Current wolf policy working just fine in Minnesota and Wisconsin and Michigan

Ask the 1000s of Whitetail deer that die of starvation, every year, in the Northeast because we, in our infinite wisdom, wiped out the natural predators. The wolves belong where they are, and always HAVE belonged. Leave them alone!!!

Leave the wolves alone. We like them. Better than we like men with guns.

Please leave the wolves alone. They are such beautiful animals and do not deserve to die at the hands of humans.

Its time to learn some moderation. Its time to start restoring the balance.

Just got notification that Idaho legislators are seeking permission to basically wipe out their wolf population, especially in the Lolo District of Clearwater National Forest. Are you seriously even considering this? What do they think keeps the wildlife populations in balance out there, spuds? If we had a few wolves around where I live, we wouldn't have to have mass shootings by wildlife officers of unhealthy, out of control deer herds every other year. Don't let Idaho ranchers make a sweeping, irrevocable move that could conceivably only benefit a small number of cattle for the short-term. Surely we can for once be smarter than that.

We need to respect and protect wild life in order for us all to sustain life on this planet.

Please support and protect the ecosystem that the wolves are apart of. It would seem common sense that the Fish and Wildlife Dept. should be advocating for the protection of wildlife that offers this country its diversity of nature.

We need to educated people on ecosystems. There is always a Godly solution to everything. Wolves diet consists mostly of rodents. They are not a big threat to livestock. Wolves are very afraid of people and big dogs. Their bad reputation is mostly unfounded. If we keep arrogantly destroying the elements in the balance of nature we'd better watch out because we'll all pay for it. These are sentient creatures. You'd have to be pretty heartless to kill them with poison or trapping.

This is senseless killing--targeting animals that have caused no harm. Wildlife professionals need to institute provisions that make it possible for humans and wolves to live together; annihilation is not the answer.

I am afraid that I do not understand why Idaho is requesting the right to kill an animal that has fought its way back from near extinction in these United States. Requests such as this should be denied on this basis alone. You have the power and the responsibility to protect these animals from those who probably wish there was no such animal created. But there was, and for a reason, just as human beings were created, for a reason.......which is not to intentionally kill those creatures selected by them to be exterminated..........Please take these remarks into consideration when making a decision.

How could anyone kill these beautiful majestic animals? Wolves symbolize everything the West has to be proud of- and they are individuals, with a desire to live, a love of family, and a capacity for suffering and pain. Please protect them!!

This doesn't sound like a method of control to me just an out and out attempt at distinction. I am appalled at the insensitivity towards these beautiful creatures that have been a part of our nation's history!
