FDA Schedules Vote on Plan B - Make This Time the Last!

Target: Andrew von Eschenbach, FDA Commissioner
Sponsored by: NARAL Pro-Choice America
The morning-after pill: Women have been waiting a long time to access it without a prescription. Now, the FDA has re-started its decision-making process around the fate of the morning-after pill, also known as Plan B.

Despite FDA experts' own findings that Plan B is a safe and effective contraceptive method for women AND their recommendation that it be approved for over-the-counter use, anti-choice politicians have successfully pressured the FDA to refuse to improve access to it for more than 3 years.

Don't let lack of public pressure be the reason the FDA sits on its laurels again.

Sign the petition to make this THE LAST round of decision-making on the morning-after pill!

Call on the FDA to support its own internal recommendations and stand with the hundreds of thousands of women who favor over-the-counter access to Plan B now!
deadline: 8-1-2007

On Thursday August 24th, after a contentious three-year battle, the FDA voted to make Plan B available to women without a prescription.

This victory has been attributed in no small part to the action of women's rights groups and their supporters. Thanks from everyone at Care2 and NARAL Pro-Choice America for giving women the power to choose!

Keep up the good work!

Dear Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach,

I'm writing in regards to the recent announcement that the FDA will re-start its decision-making process over approving the morning-after pill, or Plan B, for over-the-counter use.

Women have been waiting for over three years for the FDA to make this decision. And as you're well aware, your agency's own senior scientists and experts have found that emergency contraception is a safe and effective method for preventing unintended pregnancy and have recommended its approval for over-the-counter use.

We urge you to listen to the findings of your colleagues and to respect the wishes of hundreds of thousands of women around the country by improving their access to the morning-after pill.

[YOUR COMMENT]

We've all waited long enough.

Thank you.
We signed the “FDA Schedules Vote on Plan B - Make This Time the Last!” petition!

These constant delays are ALL POLITICS. You need to protect the women of America by GIVING THEM A CHOICE in what they want for their bodies. They don't have to take it but it should be available.

The only way to reduce the number of abortions is to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies. Emergency contraception can do just that if made readily available. In order for EC to work properly, it must be taken within 72 hours of intercourse. If a condom breaks on Friday and a woman has to wait until Monday to get an appointment at the clinic, her chances of pregnancy occurring will have increased tremendously. However, if she can go immediately to a pharmacy or have EC on hand "just in case," an unwanted pregnancy (and posible abortion) will have been prevented.

Making Plan B available without prescription is the right thing to do!

No one wants to face the decision about having an abortion. Plan B stops abortions.

Over 5000 women have died due to unwanted pregnancy and over 50,000 unwanted children have been born while the old men stubbornly try to punish women for their "sins." This is just immoral religious craziness.

This is an effective way of preventing unwanted and unnecessary pregnancies. Women should have the right , just as men have, to make comprehensive health care choices, and especially those concerning reproduction.

It is time to end this delay. Plan B is a safe and effective medication. Stop putting politics before women's health.

This is an excellent way to reduce the number of abortions if the drug is readily available.

If you have the option to CHOOSE everyone can do what they feel is right in their mind. Keep religion out of this; it's not about religion or a group of religious politicians to tell me how to live my life based on THEIR religious beliefs. When you have a law or policy that is LEGAL it makes it safe for everyone. If you don't believe in taking this or any pill or if you don't believe in abortion, don't take the pills or don't have the abortion! But don't make that decision for me; I can do that for myself and if there are any kind of consequences then it's for me to face them. Keep your laws and your nose out of and off my body and my personal business.

The FDA should base its decisions on science, not politics or religion. Please listen to your own panel of experts and approve this drug for OTC use.

This product will only be taken by women who do not want to become pregnant, and will therefore prevent abortion or more unwanted children raised by unprepared parent(s). You are kidding yourself if you think that many women seeking this pill would carry the unwanted pregnacy to term and then give the baby up for adoption. It can only prevent disaster in people's lives and make this country a better place in which to live.
