FDA Schedules Vote on Plan B - Make This Time the Last!

Target: Andrew von Eschenbach, FDA Commissioner
Sponsored by: NARAL Pro-Choice America
The morning-after pill: Women have been waiting a long time to access it without a prescription. Now, the FDA has re-started its decision-making process around the fate of the morning-after pill, also known as Plan B.

Despite FDA experts' own findings that Plan B is a safe and effective contraceptive method for women AND their recommendation that it be approved for over-the-counter use, anti-choice politicians have successfully pressured the FDA to refuse to improve access to it for more than 3 years.

Don't let lack of public pressure be the reason the FDA sits on its laurels again.

Sign the petition to make this THE LAST round of decision-making on the morning-after pill!

Call on the FDA to support its own internal recommendations and stand with the hundreds of thousands of women who favor over-the-counter access to Plan B now!
deadline: 8-1-2007
goal: 40,000

On Thursday August 24th, after a contentious three-year battle, the FDA voted to make Plan B available to women without a prescription.

This victory has been attributed in no small part to the action of women's rights groups and their supporters. Thanks from everyone at Care2 and NARAL Pro-Choice America for giving women the power to choose!

Keep up the good work!

Dear Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach,

I'm writing in regards to the recent announcement that the FDA will re-start its decision-making process over approving the morning-after pill, or Plan B, for over-the-counter use.

Women have been waiting for over three years for the FDA to make this decision. And as you're well aware, your agency's own senior scientists and experts have found that emergency contraception is a safe and effective method for preventing unintended pregnancy and have recommended its approval for over-the-counter use.

We urge you to listen to the findings of your colleagues and to respect the wishes of hundreds of thousands of women around the country by improving their access to the morning-after pill.

[YOUR COMMENT]

We've all waited long enough.

Thank you.
We signed the “FDA Schedules Vote on Plan B - Make This Time the Last!” petition!

Every scientist who studied Plan B at the FDA agreed that the medication was safe and effective for women of any age, including young teens. Their recommendation, to make Plan B available as an OTC drug for woman of all ages, was overruled for political reasons. Politicians who listen closely to the "religious" right are now beginning to (correctly) feel a backlash; many are way behind in the polls for the general election in November, and some are losing their primaries, such as the state-wide school board right wingers who pushed so-called "intelligent" design in Kansas. I suspect Dr. Eschenbach will indeed either be confirmed by the Senate, or appointed through an interim recess appointment by the president. Those who support his imposing these ridiculous restrictions on the sale of Plan B will eventually face the anger of the citizens of their state.

The morning after pill painlessly averts huge amounts of misery and expense for those who for whatever reason prefer to avoid pregnancy.

This is your moral duty to the women of the world. If you men were the ones being raped you would approve this pill in a heartbeat.

It's itme to stop the fundamentalist politicking and playing games with women and to do what science and the public wants--and has wanted for three years. Approve plan B

Because there is NO medical reasons not to. and moral reasons are to be left up to individuals, NOT our government.

Unwanted pregnancies that go to term produce children who are condemned to lives of perpetual alienation and emotional pain, abuse, and psychological trauma. Women forced into parenthood by outside forces--antiabortionist groups, religious moralists, etc.--do not make good parents. Let's put a stop to any laws that prevent women from choosing whether or not they want to have children conceived in error.

This drug will help to reduce the need for abortions and empower women with greater reproductive control. Plan B is already available over the counter in 45 European countries. Don't American women deserve the same freedom of choice and access to medicines that help them control their reproductive choices?

The FDA is not a religious organization. It is a governmental agency set up to insure the safety of food and drugs for the consumer. Therefore, there is no valid reason for this delay.

The foot dragging on this issue has gone on long enough. It is now or never and keep in mind that the November elections are coming soon. If you do not do what is right the voters will.
