Protect Animals During Times of Disaster!

Target: Senator
Sponsored by: American Humane Association
With hurricane season on us again we need to make sure that our nation’s animals will be protected before and after a disaster.

Tragically for our pets, the federal government will not reimburse states for the cost of rescuing and sheltering animals, or for the cost of reuniting them with loving families.

But the Senate is considering a new law called the PETS bill, that acknowledges the federal government’s responsibility to provide funding to help states cover the additional costs of animal shelter, care and reunion with their families.

Please tell your U.S. Senators to support the PETS bill and help make sure pets are cared for before, and after, a disaster!

As your constituent and a supporter of the American Humane Association, I urge you to support S. 2548, the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act. This bill is an important improvement over the House-passed bill and will further efforts to make sure local governments and states will be prepared to care for animal populations when disaster strikes.

During consideration of S. 2548, it is most important that you ensure the legislation includes provisions allowing states to be reimbursed by FEMA for the costs of rescuing and sheltering family pets and service animals and reuniting them with their human families. In order for this bill to be truly effective, it not only must include animals in disaster plans, but must also provide resources that increase the ability of cities and states to meet the needs of animals during disaster. Hurricane Katrina demonstrated that the needs of animals are often integrally linked with those of their human family members. We know many families will not evacuate unless they can be assured their pets will be evacuated and sheltered.

Please support S. 2548 and insist that it contain provisions for an equitable distribution of financial assistance to states and communities for animal emergency response planning and operations. If we are to effectively prepare for emergencies, the needs of pets must be considered and resources provided to enable all states to help animals and their human family members.

Please help protect animals and the families who love and care for them. I look forward to seeing what action you will take on this very important matter.

Sincerely,
We signed the “Protect Animals During Times of Disaster!” petition!

We should never let what happen to animals during Katrina happen again! Our animals need the same protection and consideration given to people. They are just as important and truly family members!!

Pets are often the biggest victims of natural disasters and the ones that need our help the most. Our homes, cars, and things can be replaced. OUR PETS CANNOT BE REPLACED SO EASILY!!! They are living beings, not computers or appliances. To say we can just get more animals is like trying to tell a family they can just have more kids if their kids were neglected in a disaster.

It should be made a law, animals have as much right to be cared for in their hours of need as humans do. Natural disasters effect everyone. We are not superior to animals!

Without funding and shelter, animals will continue to be abandoned and killed in a state of emergency. People may even die with the weight of saving their beloved animal friend. This would be akin to a burning house with one dog that could be easily saved, but instead the firefighters just walk away. I have never heard of that happening. IT shouldn't happen ANYWHERE.

Today, I come to you, or anyone, who will help stop the insane act of killing animals, one after another. Why, are they doing this, who gives them the right. And I don't care how anyone looks at this, IT IS WRONG!!!! It is a sin against God, the animals, and Man. Please, hear my pleas, First, it was the Wild Horses of the Plains, now it's the Wolves, Prairie Dogs, even Eagles have been attacked, The Polar Bears, trapped on the broken ice, due to our atmospheric problems, we have to do something to help them. And, then, one of the most disgusting acts of all, the horrible killing of the Baby Harp Seals, and the Whales. What happened to the laws that protected our animals. I still don't understand how men can enter a NATIONAL FOREST, and shoot, and kill , for sport, our wolves. What has happened to the humanity of man, and respect for the land. These animals are all here for a reason. They are all an important part of our ecological system. And, they belong to all of us, no one has the right to kill what belongs to the earth. So, I come to you, begging, that you do something, now, right now, to save our animals, protect them from the inhumanity of people. May I ask you to do something for me, take a moment to close your eyes, and see, the grace and beauty of the wolf, and the eagle, focus on the Baby Harp Seal, those little balls of white fluff, with those big black eyes. The Polar Bears, trapped on ice floes, trying to find a way to get back to land, imagine their utter fear. And, the Prairie Dog, what harm are they doing. And, finally, imagine yourself, standing in the middle of the Prairie, then you hear a thundering which is coming from a cloud of dust, when suddenly they come into view, while you stand in awe, watching the most beautiful animal, the wild horses of the plains, the Mustangs, Paints, etc., as they run in harmony with each other, their heads held high, they are amazing. Thank you for taking this time with me. Now, maybe you will understand why we don't want to lose these beautiful creatures. Please help them, Pleae protect them. Patricia H. Holst drachen@charter.net
