Protect the Health and Safety of California's Young Women
Target: NARAL California ChapterSponsored by: NARAL Pro-Choice America
In November's special election called by Governor Schwarzenegger, Californians will see a dangerous initiative on the ballot. Californians will have an opportunity to vote on a parental notification measure on a woman's access to abortion, which threatens the health and well being of young women in our state.
Real family communication begins at home, not at the ballot box. The best way to protect our daughters is to begin talking to them about responsible, appropriate sexual behavior when they're young and to continue to keep the lines of communication open as they get older. Our focus should be on prevention of unwanted pregnancies through comprehensive sex education, counseling and access to contraceptives.
This proposed amendment to California’s constitution, known as Proposition 73, would do nothing to reduce the number of unintended teen pregnancies - pregnancies that have in fact declined 40% in California over the past decade without government mandates like this one!

This will only lead to the injury and death of young women accessing back alley hack shops instead of licensed abortion clinics. When a young woman is desperate she will often do anything to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. Must American politicians continue to evolve backwards and mix religion with politics. I used to work at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado, and I know firsthand that too many young women do not have supportive parents at home. Requiring young women to choose between appearing before a judge or asking an alcoholic, abusive, or otherwise disengaged parent for permission to get an abortion ignores the reality of life for too many teens. If a teen finds herself pregnant at a young age, chances are her relationship with her parents is not strong. So why would we then put up further hurdles for already troubled teens? Everyone agrees that it would be ideal if all young women went to their parents for guidance when faced with an unplanned pregnancy, but parental notification laws try to force functional family dynamics onto families which are anything but functional, and young women then have to shoulder this additional burden.
