Protect the Health and Safety of California's Young Women
Target: NARAL California ChapterSponsored by: NARAL Pro-Choice America
In November's special election called by Governor Schwarzenegger, Californians will see a dangerous initiative on the ballot. Californians will have an opportunity to vote on a parental notification measure on a woman's access to abortion, which threatens the health and well being of young women in our state.
Real family communication begins at home, not at the ballot box. The best way to protect our daughters is to begin talking to them about responsible, appropriate sexual behavior when they're young and to continue to keep the lines of communication open as they get older. Our focus should be on prevention of unwanted pregnancies through comprehensive sex education, counseling and access to contraceptives.
This proposed amendment to California’s constitution, known as Proposition 73, would do nothing to reduce the number of unintended teen pregnancies - pregnancies that have in fact declined 40% in California over the past decade without government mandates like this one!

I think of my brother's baby girl every day, due in three months. I shiver to think what the world will become while she's in it. Her safety means the same as my own childrens and I will do anything to keep it in tight check. Why would you propose to threaten any of it? What of your children? Do you honestly believe I or anyone whos a good parent EVER let this happen?

Governor Schwarzenegger is out of touch with reality. If he supports this, he needs to resign and go back to movie making. How do you make a 16 year old girl notify her rapist Father that she just aborted his fetus? Then possibly kills her for causing a divorce with his wife! So this means incestious Fathers get to know his victom daughter, went and had an abortion. How about the parent that is abusive, and ends up killing his daughter for having sex? I suggest that greater efforts be channeled into fostering appropriate education and communication between daughter and parent (and sons too). There is a good point in your intention to inform the parents of these young women - extra heads and hearts can provide logical reasoning and support to the distraught. But it also embodies a lack of focus on communication in the first place, and a lack of respect for the choice of the young woman in question. Please shift your focus to the improving education that will also lead to improved communication before unwanted pregnancies occur, and more innocent lives are either lost, or thrown into turmoil. Thank you for your efforts, and all the best.

God made eveything including reproduction. look at history and many pregnancies not ordained by God ended up in wars and mass killing. so do you think more mass killing of babies will solve it? get your selfish bodies in line with God's plan and stop having sex outside of marriage then you won't be thinking about killing innocent babies. Most girls who get themselves into this situation would be terrified of her parents finding out. So NO it is not a fair/cool thing to have the parents notification requirement as part of this legislation as the girls life could be in jeopardy...in more ways than one

Dear Sir/Madam: By allowing doctors and pharmacists to provide birth control to the young women of your state you are preventing children being raised by children. More and more young girls find themselves in situations that they were not ready for mentally. Physically their bodies were ready for sex and all that comes with it and emotionally they think they are ready for that too, but it is the consequences and the shame that they need help with. Parents shouldn't have the option of interferring! After a young girl has sex and is feeling very vulnerable the last people she wants to talk to is her parents. Parents bring more embarassment, shame, feeling of stupidity, yelling and basically a long scream. To let the doctors and pharmacists just help the girl with what she needs, she will feel impowered and more in control with her own life that such "mistakes" probably will not happen again. Thank you.
