Tell the Media There is No Other Side to Global Warming

Target: Fox News, CNN, NBC News
Sponsored by: Alliance for Climate Protection - We Can Solve It
The recent presidential primaries have highlighted a key imbalance in the media's coverage of global warming.

A League of Conservation Voters' study found that ABC's George Stephanopoulos asked presidential candidates more than 767 questions in a debate -- only 5 of which were related to global warming. CNN's Wolf Blitzer asked more than 402 questions -- only 5 were about global warming. Sadly, other political commentators and reporters have shown a similar disregard for this key issue.

Not to mention, when global warming is covered, many media outlets still bring on "scientists" who claim that global warming is not real, even though an overwhelming majority of scientists agree that it is. This is not balanced - this is deceiving. The public deserves responsible reporting on this critical issue.

Sign the petition today to tell these media outlets that global warming needs to be covered, and it needs to be covered in a meaningful and truly balanced manner.

Dear [media outlet],

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the coverage of the issue of global warming on your network.

Scientists around the world agree that global warming is a serious threat and a critical issue that must be acted on immediately. And yet, your network seems to either ignore that it exists, or treats it as an issue that is not yet determined to be real.

This is deceiving and irresponsible. As a member of the media, it is your responsibility to educate the public about these critical issues, and I urge you to do so in your daily coverage, and particularly with the upcoming elections.

Sincerely,
[Your name here]

There is almost nothing that compares of importance to this issue. Your future as well as everyone else's is at stake here. How can you ignore this? Who is in a position to do more?

The argument is over. Global warming is real. Just because it is not convenient or in line with your political views is no reason to sell our country and our world out. WE need to know more about the threats that we are facing and more about what we as citizens can do to deal with it. Please do not waste precious time trying to cloud the waters. You too are citizens of this planet and you need to do the right thing by it and our country.

Ask hard questions about real issues that candidates must answer. Everything else is just nonsense and we can tell the difference.

1st. There are more than 2 sides to any story. Reducing every topic to he-said/she-said isn't responsible journalism. 2nd. Not all sides are equally worthy of coverage and consideration. Publishing (promoting!) industry propaganda isn't responsible journalism.

I want to hear the truth! How are we supposed to do anything about global warming if we aren't informed about what's going on?! I'm sick of the sugar-coating, the media needs to become reliable and just tell us flat-out what's happening!

While we all rally pitifully over the issue of whether or not the planet is warming, species are dissapearing, water is becoming useless, food production is dropping and our stewardship of this miraculous host of life remains abusive at best. The real issue here is, are we responsible and mature enough to evolve and survive?

It confuses me why two simple precepts that everyone understands in daily life are almost never observed in major media. One is that almost no issue is ever black and white - all good or all bad - and yet many stories present only one side of an issue, assuming it to be THE TRUTH. The other is that no issue is half and half - 50% good and 50% bad. So, "on the one hand" and "on the other hand" coverage without indicating the weight of each is also poor journalism and cowardice as well. The global climate crisis is a spectacular example of the shortcomings of contemporary 50-50 journalism. The pro-con weight of this issue is about 98-2, but media still present it in a 50-50 "some say, but on the other hand" context. And they avoid the issue entirely for the most part. Bad for journalism, bad for society, and bad for our environment. Our earth is our only home, and it deserves better than this. Make our access to information better.
