Oppose Anti-Same Sex Marriage Constitutional Amendment

Sponsored by: Care2

The California Supreme Court has just confirmed what we all know in our hearts - that lesbians and gay men in California have every right to marry the person they love.

This is an historic moment - but there is a real threat to our joy looming in November. Anti-gay bigots are pushing to get a constitutional amendment on November's ballot to ban same-sex marriage. If approved, this amendment would overturn the Supreme Court's decision and send California into the dark ages in terms of equality.

We need to build momentum now to defeat this dangerous amendment. Please pledge to vote against a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, and then ask your friends to do the same. As we grow this movement we'll let the media know that Californians want marriage equality for all!

MY PLEDGE:

I support the rights of lesbians and gay men to marry, and I am thrilled by the California Supreme Court's decision to affirm this fundamental right. I pledge to vote NO on any constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage in California. I will spread the word about this dangerous amendment and urge all of my friends to vote NO as well.

I am a lesbian and have been in a committed relationship with my domestic partner for 22 years. We deserve the same acknowledgement, rights and benefits as all other married couples. It is time to stop the descrimination and give us all equal rights. Hooray for the California Supreme Court for doing the right thing and making marriage for same sex couples legal in California!

I think people in one of the most progressive states in the country should support everyone's right to live the life they choose. Same sex couples deserve the same legal rights and associated privileges as heterosexual couples. This country was established as a secular country and laws should not been written to accommodate religious interests.

I see no reason why gays shouldn't be afforded the same rights as everyone else. We should be encouraging love and marriage in whatever form it may take, not limiting it in any way.

Putting a restriction on marriage that is based on sexual orientation is no different than banning marriage based on race and may as well be banning marriage based on religion. It is a ridiculous and prejudice practice that needs to be stopped. It is against everything American *should* stand for (you know- equality, opportunity, etc).

I support marriage equality because it makes sense. Whether your homosexual or heterosexual, if you have committed to a life-long relationship with a partner you love, you should both qualify for all the rights inherent in such a relationship. Prohibiting such rights based on ancient belief systems just doesn't make sense in this day and age. I'd like to think that we've evolved beyond the need to base our world views on ancient philosophies and superstitions.

Love is such a difficult thing to find, for anyone. Sharing your life with another is the ultimate persuit of happiness. Why would anyone want to deny it for another person? And why would anyone think they have that right? The constitution guarantees the separation of church and state, therefore we have no right to impose a religious belief or misplaced morality upon another person, let alone use government to impliment that sacrifice of rights.

I agree with the constitutional analysis of the court. Marriage should not be defined by religious beliefs but by fair laws.

it's been a long time coming.... being GAY and having lived in California for most of my life - this is something I have always hoped for.... it would be GREAT when same sex marriages can have the same rights, and benefits and care, when it comes to marriage as the heterosexual community.

Equal rights for all - plain and simple. Separation of church and state. Keep religious beliefs out of the judicial/legal system.

I want to be equal to everyone else. And remember not everyone who is gay/lesbian wants to be married, but we should at least have the option. I thought discrimination was illegal?? Regardless of one's belief in a god or not, gays/lesbians should have rights equal to that of heteros. I refuse to continue to be discriminated against & will support this by any means necessary!

I think everyone should share the right to committed relationships, including marriage, without regard to gender or race. Pople who do not accept this concept cannot control their compulsion to meddle in the personal and private affairs of others.

It is just basic equal rights for all! For instance, I fell in love with a European and we were able to get married and stay together. My male friend is in love with a Japanese man, and because they do not have the same rights, their future is clouded by the possibility that they will be separated. Its not fair!!

Finally, we are moving toward what we always should have been--a nation of true equality with liberty and justice for all. No one should be judged by whom they love. Honest, loyal, courageous, hardworking, tax paying citizens should not be excluded because of sexual prefernce. This was an absurd fear to begin with and now, finally, reason and fairness has prevailed.

I do not want the religious right and other right-wing wackos to tell you, me or anyone else in California whom we can or can't marry. Your right-wing-wacko religious beliefs are meaningless to me.

should I ever find Mr. Right, I want to be able to share my life with him the same as any other married couple in this country. That is my God given right and our government should defend that right to the end!!!
