Oppose Anti-Same Sex Marriage Constitutional Amendment

Sponsored by: Care2

The California Supreme Court has just confirmed what we all know in our hearts - that lesbians and gay men in California have every right to marry the person they love.

This is an historic moment - but there is a real threat to our joy looming in November. Anti-gay bigots are pushing to get a constitutional amendment on November's ballot to ban same-sex marriage. If approved, this amendment would overturn the Supreme Court's decision and send California into the dark ages in terms of equality.

We need to build momentum now to defeat this dangerous amendment. Please pledge to vote against a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, and then ask your friends to do the same. As we grow this movement we'll let the media know that Californians want marriage equality for all!

MY PLEDGE:

I support the rights of lesbians and gay men to marry, and I am thrilled by the California Supreme Court's decision to affirm this fundamental right. I pledge to vote NO on any constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage in California. I will spread the word about this dangerous amendment and urge all of my friends to vote NO as well.

Love is love is love. If we truly allow voters to define what love is, and do not defer to constitutional checks and balances in this society, then laws prohibiting miscegenation would be in force. The Supreme Court via Loving v. Virginia granted civil liberties to a married couple in a state where "voters" did not (19 years after the State of California repealed its anti-miscegenation law via Perez v. Sharp). While we do live in a democracy, we live in a DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC. That means, as I am sure you are well aware, we have safeguards in place to protect minority parties against majority tyranny. The freedom to "love as love so desires" I firmly believe is one such instance.

Love is love. That's all there is to it. For those that constantly bring the Bible and God into the argument against gay marriage, that is a poor excuse. There is no definition in the Constitution regarding marriage, whether it should be gay or straight. In addition, this country was founded on the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Isn't marriage part of the pursuit of happiness for some people? It doesn't say "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness unless you're gay". Shouldn't all the little girls who dream about marriage and are lesbian have the same right to have that dream as straight girls? We are denying people their liberties. And as for "protecting the sanctity of marriage", that is a complete joke. Our country has over a 50% divorce rate. Many people remarry multiple times. How is that so sacred? I find that a gay couple who has been together 25 years much more sacred than a straight couple who's been together two and divorces. What about separation of church and state? This country was founded on the principle that the church would not interfere with legal matters and vice versa: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. Therefore, if the only excuse for non-gay marriage is religions, it's violating the first amendment. Whether or not you believe in God, the Bible, etc, should have no bearing on the legal choice for gay marriage. I believe in God, and I still support gay marriage. I'm not going to go into my beliefs regarding the bible, but I will say that religion does not belong in the American government. End of rant. Support LOVE!

This is an affront to the Constitution. We cannot celebrate our unalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness while in the very same breath announce that only certain "acceptable" groups may claim that right; then attempt to justify that bigotry by changing the very document that grants that freedom. If we allow this to happen, what else will be amended; what other freedoms denied, what other people deemed unworthy or unacceptable?

Any human being should have the right to marry another human being. My marriage is not sacrosanct. I'm not threatened by people who want to share their love and their lives.

There is nothing wrong with two people who love each other being married. It doesn't / shouldn't matter what sex they are. They should have the same rights as any other couple.

Having lesbians and gay men marry does not take anything away from straights who marry. They should have the same rights and responsibilities.

I oppose with the Anti-Same Sex Marriage Constitutional Amendment! I totally support the sme sex marriage becouse it's what's in the relationship that counts. It doesn't matter who gets married just as long as they love each other and that they can make it work. I know alot of man/woman realtionships that do not work and then I know alot of relationships between the same sexes that do work for a long time. I would love to marry a woman if I knew someone that I was into but right now I'm in the middle of liking man or female. I don't know! If anyone of my five children would want to be with their own sex then I would totally appauld and be supportive of them and their decision. It's a tough world out there already and we should be worried about the war and world ending not who wants to be with whom. We as a community of people should be supportive of each other and unite and save this planet before there is nothing for anyone of us to be on. There was bisexual, gay and lesbians years ago. This is not something that people catch, it's something they feel in their heart. The reason that it wasn't out like it is now is becouse they was afraid to speak up for what they believe in and what they feel in their heart but I'm sure if I was living back in the days that I would have been speaking up for my friends and their rights to be bisexual, gay or lesbian. I think that the best of my friends are mostly gay or lesbian. I hope that by me writing this it motivates others to speak up and join together to beat the odds. I work at Mcdonalds on the south side of Sheboygan and I'm proud to be who I am and proud to have wonderful friends that chose to be with whomever they please, no matter what people may say or do. I hope to see some of my friends with their names on here, so we can all join together and show others that we're not afriad to speak our minds and our hearts.

California the joke of the century. .it wouldn't be so bad if this was called a civil union. . but anyone addressing it as marriage needs to read the bible and Webster . You have no right to take away the sanctity of the meaning of marriage. .and permit it to be used for gay couples. .I don't care whois gay and who isn't I hate the word MARRIAGE USED. . IT SHOULD BE UNION. . DON'T CONFUSE THESE KIDS IN THIS COUNTRY THEY ARE ALREADY CONFUSED.

This is not right! It goes against everything the majority of people in this country believe. Same sex relationship are against the Bible and are not condoned in the eyes of God!

What does gender have to do with love? Because it's about the two people and the relationship that they have created. It's about two people deciding that they want to commit to each other in this way..

Fairness and a "level playing field" - the ideas are bandied about, but when something flies in the face of entrenched opinion, fairness falls by the wayside. Do not undercut California's Supreme Court's decision on the right of homosexual men and women to marry the person of their choice because a loud minority find the concept of same-sex unions unpleasant or against their personal beliefs. If personal beliefs still were the rule, African Americans would still be slaves and women would be non-voting chattels.

Because it is only right to join in marriage two PEOPLE who truly love each other. The two deserve not only our respect as a loving couple but should have the same rights that all Americans enjoy under the Equal Rights Amendment.

I support hole-heartedly same sex couples getting equal marriage rights as those given straight couples and am over-joyed by supreme court's decision in California. I would love to see the 43rd ammendment repealed from the constitution of the state of Colorado so I can someday share these rights.

I believe that any person should have the right to love who ever they want to love whether that be a man or a woman. It isn't right that people aren't seen as equals just because of the relationship type. Everyone should be treated the same; if an adult man want to marry an adult woman or an adult man wants to marry an adult man or if an adult woman wants to marry an adult woman; it shouldn't make a difference to anyone. Love is love.

who are we to Judge. Obviously straight people don't need to give advice on marriage, considering the divorce rate is 60 percent or more.

Apparently the terms "Equals Rights" don't mean anything to our government. Let's have some real equal rights for a change. Let everyone have the right to marry regardless of orientation or get rid of marriage entirely. We cannot have special rights; equal rights or nothing at all. Our founding fathers had enough foresight to grant equal rights for everyone, you would be tarnishing the very foundation of this country to decide otherwise.

I am a married heterosexual woman, and allowing homosexual persons to marry the partner of their choice does not change or belittle my marriage. It does not alter the fundamental truth that this is the person I have chosen to spend my life with. Additionally, I don't want someone else's religious beliefs forced upon me, even though they would not apply to me they revolt me. There is a seperation of church and state, a freedom of religion! Both are violated by 'some religion' being universally applied to ALL people reguardless of their own personal religious beliefs. MY religion does not say homosexuality is bad, so don't make me subject to one that does!
