Support a National Wolf Recovery Plan

Target: Dale Hall, head of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife
In the wake of the federal delisting of wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies, Defenders of Wildlife and our allies at the Natural Resources Defense Council have filed a formal petition with the Fish and Wildlife Service calling for a national wolf recovery plan.

Such a plan would help ensure a lasting future for wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies and provide a needed boost for wolf recovery and management efforts in the Southwest, Northeast and Pacific Northwest.

Help support this forward-looking effort to protect the gray wolf's important part in America. Sign our petition to send your personalized comments to Dale Hall, head of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

As someone who cares about ensuring a lasting future for wolves in the U.S., I strongly urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to adopt a comprehensive recovery plan for wolves in the contiguous United States.

I was deeply concerned about the recent elimination of federal protections for wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies. By turning over management to states that plan to kill as many as 70% of the wolves in the region, your agency has dealt a serious blow to wolf recovery efforts.

The agency's failure to secure a future for wolves in the Southwest is also of great concern to me.

The Service's recovery plans for America's wolves are badly out of date (the most recent plan is over 15-years old), do not reflect the most recent scientific data on wolves, and set recovery goals that are grossly inadequate.

Wildlife management needs to be handled on a national basis in order to see the whole picture. We cannot throw these incredibly beautiful, majestic animals to the "people," - if you get my play on words. Our ecosystem is fragile enough without reducing it's diversity any more.

The Service's recovery plans for America's wolves are badly out of date (the most recent plan is over 15-years old), do not reflect the most recent scientific data on wolves, and set recovery goals that are grossly inadequate. view more The recovery plan for the Northern Rocky Mountain wolf, for example, calls for three groups of 10 breeding pairs of wolves. The recovery plan for the Mexican gray wolf is 25 years old, and contains only an interim goal of 100 wolves in a single area. And the recovery plan for the eastern timber wolf only commits to establishing one population of 100 wolves outside of Minnesota, completely ignoring the available habitat in the Northeastern U.S. These plans are simply inadequate to ensure a lasting future for wolves in the United States, which would require multiple, connected populations, and several thousand individual wolves. That's why I strongly urge your agency to adopt the national wolf recovery plan put forth by Defenders of Wildlife and the Natural Resources Defense Council. Such a plan would help ensure a lasting future for wolves in the Northern Rockies and provide a needed boost for wolf recovery and management efforts in the Southwest, Northeast and Pacific Northwest. Thank you for considering my comments. Julie Beaty

The wolf is a beautiful animal that should be protected for future generations. They are an important part of the ecosystem. And only a fool kills animals for no reason , don't be fools!

I think this is just REPULSIVE! Let's just kill everything - polar bears, seals, chimpanzees, bears, (cats, dogs,(China, Japan, Koreans, Vietnamese eat them & torture them (skin them alive & boil them, etc.) What is this world coming to? Damn Bush & Cheney & I'm a Republican & voted for this man & kick my butt every time I think about it. To chase down a wolf pack & pups to exhaustion by plane is sadistical along with traps & poison - it is beyond apprehension. This is ONE SICK WORLD! God will have his say in the end - they will have to answer to the "Big Guy" in the end. Lord helps us all & the animals.

Why do americans have to kill things they don't understand? After building the wolf population back to a 'nature' normal they go back to doing what has destoyed so many wild animals in America and other countries. Have you lost all sense of life in the wild?

Wolves are not only worthy of protection for their own survival, they are the key species that sets the ecosystem in this region. Since wolves have returned, the ecosystem has begun to return, with animal and plant species in balance. Killing these animals is not only wrong, it will devastate this environment. We finally are able to understand how ecosystems are co-dependent. Don't ignore this evidence and resume this ill-conceived plan.

Wolves play a very important part in the ecosystem, as well as an important part in many religious settings. They are beautiful, intelligent creatures that should be preserved for our children and grandchildren.

i say capture the excess wolfes in yellow stone and tranfer them to other places that have low populations to help promote a stronger base population and reduce the chances of inbreeding ,that would weaken the population . we america brought wolfe from canada to restock and to repopulate the yellow stone wolfes lets not kill them off to the endanger list again .

For one wolves are majestic creatures and deserve respect like any other living creature.Secondly we don't want another animal slowly becomeing extinct.Especially one that is important to it's enviroment as a wolf.Beautiful, cunning animals.

Too often the government does in excess of what is meant to control an over abundant amount of certain species, this can be seen around the world not only here. This is true of tigers, whales, deer, mountain lions, eagles, elephants and the list goes on. How about going after the sharks on the beach lines, or the alligators snatching joggers in Florida. I just think if you are going to protect the communities at large than go after the ones can walk into our backyard and snatch out babies or making our recreation time less recreational. I am just saying where does the government's priorities really lie. Not to mention that each time people mess with the balance of nature we later regret what has been done. Have they thought about relocating some of the wolves to areas where deer over populate a region, upstate NY could have used them about 5 years ago.

Please protect these animals. The slaughter of these wolves is unwarranted and shows just how unjust and unwise the Bush administration is.

Of what benefit is it to society to kill off what remains of a very important part of the ecosystem. I realize those who are most interested in killing wolves are doing it for their own personal enjoyment as "sport". I would think that we have a more valid reason for allowing them since those people who kill wolves for "sport" represent less than 1% of the population.

Wolves are integral to maintaining a healthy balance in Nature. Removing them from Federal Protection seriously inhibits their ability to maintain that balance by allowing the Wolf population to be murdered simply for existing. A new plan needs to be activated that creates protection, harmony and balance.

Wolves were here long before we were. Stop playing GOD and let nature alone. We've messed up so many other species by interferring it's time to back off and let nature take it's course. Native American's have the right idea. Every creature has a right to live.

Wolves are a beautiful and very intelligent animal that deserve the right to live and not be hunted into extinction. They represent wildlife at the top and are necessary to keeping the chain togethe. Each time the chain is broken by allowing another animal to become extinct our own life becomes more tenuous as well.

Wolves are a highly important part of the ecosystems in which they have historically been a part of, and generally undervalued by managers responsible for their survival. Please work towards a scientifically sound national recovery plan!

I support this because I care about wolves. They are among God's most beautiful creatures. They don't deserve to be killed like they mean nothing to the world. I cannot stand anybody killing them for recreation, or just in general. The government has made a huge mistake by eliminating protections against wolves and we need the protections back on.

Wolves were protected for a reason and the president is wrong for lifting the ban. I can not see his reason for this act. It is our job to protect such wildlife without them there is a break in the food chain and we are organizing our own demise.

It is irrisponsible, to say the least, to remove these animals from protection, and than allow them to be slaughtered wholesale.
