Every year, an estimated four to six million dogs and cats are euthanized in animal care and control facilities in the United States. This problem is pervasive, and it remains a source of shame for our country.
The American Humane Association's Getting to Zero® Initiative is a national undertaking based on the profound belief that, within our lifetime, American society can reduce to zero the number of healthy or treatable dogs, cats and other companion animals that are euthanized in animal care and control facilities.
This program will help identify, support and obtain funding for the replication of community-based interventions that have demonstrated success in reducing the euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals. These include adoption, foster care, spay/neuter, training, transfer and generally bringing community support where it is needed most.
Sign this petition today to support programs like American Humane's Getting to Zero® Initiative, because these animals all deserve a chance to live!
We signed the “End Euthanasia of Healthy and Treatable Animals!” petition!

euthanasia is not the best approach to control population. We should end it from the beginning by neuter/spay pets and stop puppy mills from breeding more pets.

The prevailing attitude about animals seems to be "use, abuse, and discard" and this needs to change. All living beings deserve love, care and respect. What does it say about us as human beings that we so easily and readily end the lives of countless healthy animals? Please help put an end to this senseless and cruel slaughter. I believe that when we come up with, and implement a better and more thoughtful and humane solution to pet overpopulation, then we will have attained a higher state of awareness and consciousness that will benefit us all.

we would not kill a human if they were alive and healthy, some people think animals are not humans but I think different. They have a heart just like a human.

I understand there is overcrowding but a longer effort and period of adoption needs to be allowed to these wonderful pets. I used to work in a Vet Clinic and gave up my job because I saw ONE healthy dog be put down and I couldn't deal with this cruel act. Help save these wonderful animals that are ready to give there love and companionship to anyone willing to give them a chance.

I think "Best Friends" in Kanab, Utah has the right idea. This rescue organization never euthanizes any animal no matter what. These animals came about because of people and people need to take care of them.

Education of the public about spay and neutering is very important and this begins in the schools.. This should be an educational program in each school system across the country..!

Euthanasia of healthy pets is wrong. It is not the answer to overpopulation. More emphasis should be put into mandatory spay and neuter programs to prevent overpopulation in the first place.

Animal Control should investigate all advertisments in the classified section of every newspaper which advertise puppies for sale. There are too many back-yard breeders trying to make an extra buck at the expense of innocent animals.
