Every year, an estimated four to six million dogs and cats are euthanized in animal care and control facilities in the United States. This problem is pervasive, and it remains a source of shame for our country.
The American Humane Association's Getting to Zero® Initiative is a national undertaking based on the profound belief that, within our lifetime, American society can reduce to zero the number of healthy or treatable dogs, cats and other companion animals that are euthanized in animal care and control facilities.
This program will help identify, support and obtain funding for the replication of community-based interventions that have demonstrated success in reducing the euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals. These include adoption, foster care, spay/neuter, training, transfer and generally bringing community support where it is needed most.
Sign this petition today to support programs like American Humane's Getting to Zero® Initiative, because these animals all deserve a chance to live!
We signed the “End Euthanasia of Healthy and Treatable Animals!” petition!

I simply don't like and don't agree that animals are put down unnecessarily.

I used to support the ASPCA because I thought that they were all about protecting the animals from cruelty. I just found out that they euthanize all the animals that they could not find homes for within a short period of time. I would consider that very CRUEL - killing is killing no matter how you do it. Who are they, or anybody else for that matter, to decide what is best for the animals? If given the choice between being locked up for a while until somebody adopts me or being killed - I would choose the former. I have seen people agreeing to tracheostomies/ ventilators/ feeding tubes and a life confined in bed with bedsores until their flesh rotted off just so they could be "alive". I am not saying that I wish this for any animal, but if the animals could talk - I do not think any would think that being KILLED is the "humane" way.
As for how we can end euthanasia, we can prevent overpopulation by getting donations to pay vets for free or low cost neutering or spaying. We could also spay and neuter the animals in our shelters to alleviate the over-population problem. I know that as soon as animal lovers know of our cause to end euthanasia of healthy & treatable animals, they would all rally behind us & shift all their donations from the ASPCA to us since we are truly against cruelty to animals.

Please everyone help stop this tragedy. Instead of funding the costs of killing these innocent animals, why not put those funds to work on a program that traps and spays/neuters strays and feriles. This would be much more productive and would have a positive, long term effect on the problem. Killing them is not the answer; Having more low/no cost spaying for low income families wouldnt hurt either. Many of the abandoned litters come from pets of low income families who cannot afford to spay their pet. This is an excellent opportunity for Universities to offer vet students' time in a win/win situation. They learn while animals benefit at no cost to their owners.

it makes me so upset that thousands of animals everyday are being put down for the simple fact that they have no home.

Ending the lives of so many beautiful animals because of human stupidity is wrong. We (society) need to exersize more responsibility towards our animal population through education and birth control measures. Such wonderful creations of GOD need our help to survive and flourish. All they want is an opportunity to have a place to call home, food in their dishes and someone to love and to be loved by.

There is no need to be killing healthy animals. I have previously worked in shelters and vet clinics for 7 years and have seen too many senseless deaths. There could be no cost neutering for low income qualified people (cost could be offset by less animals in shelter). Have more funding /incentives for no-kill shelters and more tax breaks for people who adopt shelter and rescue animals. Require age appropriate education to children at all school levels with the truth and consequences of neutering/breeding/abuse and adopting shelter animals. Increase license fee and retrieval from shelter fines and offer immediate low/no cost neutering at that point to reduce the fee. Regulate breeders and pet stores through associations to stop puppy farms /backyard breeders with heavy fines for non-compliance.

Alternative ways to help animals is very much better then we have going now. Killing animals because to 'fix them' is so expensive. Cheap spading is still 50.00 + , hard for the poor families to spend their money on. So the problem just escalates.

There is absolutely no need for this inhumane and abhorrent practice. All it takes is education and the political will to behave like civilised human beings.

It's nothing short of a crime that this happens and will continue to happen unless people take responsibility for their animals and get them fixed.

Euthanasia is a terrible, terrible thing. These dogs deserve to be saved and so many of them can become therapy or service dogs. Their lives are important and can also give life back to other people with medical and emotional problems. Please, please give these dogs a chance at life and a chance for them to help others. Stop euthanasia!

More people need to be involved in animal rescue, whether through an organized rescue group or individually. I have been taking the "neighborhood" cats & kittens to be spayed/nuetered & get shots. I am fortunate that there are many animal lovers who share information & contacts. I receive vouchers to cover most of the veterinary cost. I have found homes for 5 cats. Some are are feral & live in the neighborhood. They always have food & shelter available at my house. 1 person, a few cats.......

Euthanasia needs to be abolished, educating people is not working! Pet owners need to recognize the importance of sterilizing their pets; county regulations would solve this problem. As for AKC breeders and Puppy Mills both are adding to the problem of pet overpopulation. Strict ordinances need to be implemented in regards to the amount of litters any breeder can have with a fee charged for each breeding; these can be enforced by requiring a certificate with a number as proof the litters are registered per ordinance guidelines. The government needs to rewite legislation which acknowledges dogs as pets not Livestock; this alone would be a huge step towards shutting down puppy mills. We all have the power to see these objectives through, we simply need to put our compassion into action.

I allowed my dog's to die at home where they are surounded by love. I would do anything to have them back. They lived their lives loved. I can't imagine killing a healthy animal.

I have many stray ferals where I now live, not by choice. I spend every cent I can afford to spay and neuter, than a neighbor will catch one or two and kill them for no reason. we need to remember these are put in our care by God himself
