In the U.S., more cats are intentionally killed than die of any other cause. But this doesn't have to be the case. Virtually every feral cat that enters a shelter or animal control facility is killed. The very system that is supposed to care about the welfare of animals is, in fact, subjecting them to a ruthless policy of extermination.
Funded by taxpayer dollars, these inhumane programs do not effectively control cat population growth. Only one method - Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) - does.
Feral cats are born outdoors and have not been socialized. Uncomfortable around humans, they will never be comfortable living in human homes. They make homes in colonies wherever they can find food, be it in alleys or under a boardwalk. On their own without human intervention, breeding is not controlled and their numbers steadily increase.
All cats, even those born outside and having never lived with a human family, should be allowed to live the lives they deserve - outdoors, happy, healthy and prevented from becoming part of an endless cycle of breeding.
Pledge that you want the killing of feral cats to stop, then learn about the TNR method and how you can take personal action to help these cats.
I pledge to do one or more of the following:
- Call my Mayor and urge her or him to support TNR for feral cats in my town.
- Learn more about humane management of feral cat colonies by receiving information from Alley Cat Allies.
- Share what I have learned with my family and friends, so that they can also help protect feral cats.
- Become a feral cat caregiver and learn the humane Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) technique.
- Talk to my veterinarian about providing low cost spay/neuter services for feral cats.
- Write a letter to the editor of my local newspaper.

I adopted a feral cat with her two kittens, the kittens are now 6 years old and one of them is like the most domesticated cat.

Feral cats are an important part of the urban & suburban ecosystem in that they help keep the rodent population down. Trap-Neuter-Release is the humane way to keep the feral cat population down & Keep these ecosystems healthy - as rodents carry many diseases that transmit to humans. One of my cats was a feral kitten, the other was found abandoned with his litter-mates, both are neutered. I have also helped with local vetnarians a that provided humane traps & free neutering services for feral cats.

Killing these animals IS NOT the answer!Catching,neuter/spaying,and finding them loving homes,is the best way to solve the ferral cat problem!!

My best friend found a feral kitten and when she took it to the vet to be checked out, she was advised by the vet that the best thing to do was put it to sleep. Thank God, she didn't follow that advice. She looked around until she found a vet that agreed to help her transition the kitty into domestic life and although she is a feisty kitty, she is a great pet. Useless killing is never the answer!!

Bravo - I really like the idea of training laypersons to aid in/perform neutering operations. I am a veterinary technician at a busy clinic. This sort of plan would definitely benefit us.

I strongly support grand-scale spay/neuter programs. To effect the ubiquity and efficacy of such programs, I propose "neuter training" for interested non-veterinary individuals. Such training would feature in-depth coursework and practica under the tutelage of a licensed veterinarian in the relatively simple procedure of felid/canid male neutering. Graduates would in turn offer low-cost or free neuter services to their communities, effectively reducing the schedule load for practicing veterinarians. Thank you for the opportunity to share my ideas!

a tnr program addresses the problem - i.e., that of overpopulation - without the ungodly practice of unneccessary extermination. if the greatness of a nation may be found in the way it treats its animals (gandhi) what, then, are we in the process of becoming? in italy, it is illegal to kill a healthy stray. clearly, the descendants of the romans are holding onto their precedent of being a civilization more advanced than the rest of the world in this area.

I work with a Cats organization in Chattanooga,Tn. We do many spay/neuter colony cats and adopt out cats every weekend at our local Petsmart store. We also have a low spay/neuter clinic in the area which is awesome. We have many volunteers and vets who all help us tremendously.

The only time I would ever be in favor of killing any animal is if it's is so old that it cannot function on its own, or if it's so harmed that it will not be able to lead a normal life, so naturally I am against killing feral, or any, cats unless they are diseased or in such pain that putting them out of their misery would be a favor. I have helped by spaying and neutering my cats and convincing my family and friends to do the same, and by keeping my pets inside. Spaying and Neutering is the solution, not murder.

Capture, neuter/spay, release/rehome. Killing is never the right answer for healthy cats.
