Oppose the Killing of Cats

Sponsored by: Alley Cat Allies

In the U.S., more cats are intentionally killed than die of any other cause. But this doesn't have to be the case. Virtually every feral cat that enters a shelter or animal control facility is killed. The very system that is supposed to care about the welfare of animals is, in fact, subjecting them to a ruthless policy of extermination.

Funded by taxpayer dollars, these inhumane programs do not effectively control cat population growth. Only one method - Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) - does.

Feral cats are born outdoors and have not been socialized. Uncomfortable around humans, they will never be comfortable living in human homes. They make homes in colonies wherever they can find food, be it in alleys or under a boardwalk. On their own without human intervention, breeding is not controlled and their numbers steadily increase.

All cats, even those born outside and having never lived with a human family, should be allowed to live the lives they deserve - outdoors, happy, healthy and prevented from becoming part of an endless cycle of breeding.

Pledge that you want the killing of feral cats to stop, then learn about the TNR method and how you can take personal action to help these cats.

I pledge to do one or more of the following:
- Call my Mayor and urge her or him to support TNR for feral cats in my town.
- Learn more about humane management of feral cat colonies by receiving information from Alley Cat Allies.
- Share what I have learned with my family and friends, so that they can also help protect feral cats.
- Become a feral cat caregiver and learn the humane Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) technique.
- Talk to my veterinarian about providing low cost spay/neuter services for feral cats.
- Write a letter to the editor of my local newspaper.

Many ststes have instituted the TNR [trap-neuter-return policy] with excellent results by volunteers. To kill the cats is terribly cruel and in time the cats that are fixed grow older, leave the colony and remain pretty healthy keeping rodents at a minimum.

For some reason, my grandparents' house was always chosen as a spot to dump off house cats that people simply did not care enough to find another home for. As a result, there were at least 30 cats at one time that hung around their house for as long as I can remember. Most of them were born there by the ones who breeded there, and as a result, there were many feral cats there. My grandparents were not rich by far, having had 12 kids raised on a farm, so my grandma got used to cooking meals for around 20 people. She continued to cook that much even when it was just her and my grandpa living there. The rest, she would put out for these poor cats to eat. I guess she was one of the original animal lovers. Although she would never let them in the house, as there were way too many, she always managed to take care of her "pets" as she called them. By her kind actions, many of the cats that were born as wild cats would even come up to the visitors of her house, and some people would even take them home with them. I'm sure that if she were as nasty as those who dumped the cats off originally, or like those in the shelters, she would have just rounded up the cats and taken them to shelters, where they would have been senselessly killed. Even though they had to live outside, even in the winter, they had a much better life than ones that end up being killed simply because they did'nt get a home elsewhere. My grandma always tried to provide them with warm shelter, there was a vent that came out of the house that gave off heat, and she would make a shelter for them there. When the ignorant neighbor shot one of the cats, ending up shooting it's jaw off, thereby resulting in the poor cat not being able to eat, my grandparents got special food that it could just lick and get nutrition that way. They spent so much time feeding the poor thing, never giving a thought to how much it would cost them. And by the way, my grandpa, as weak and old he was, wanted to take a baseball bat to this cruel man and teach him a lesson!!!!! And I wish he would've been able to, because the man truly deserved it!!!!@

Cats are the MOST magnificent animals ! I would honestly give my life if it would end the torment that the human race puts millions of animals (not just cats) through every year. Imagine what life would be like without animals ! Don't kill feral cats !

Why are these shelters not supported by the government? Where does all our tax money go? War? We dont even need this war. This is ridiculous. People and animals are dieing because of a government unorganized. We dont have enough funds? Great. We're taxed for everthing else. If we were say taxed only fifty cents a month per person, those animals would live their lives a happy one. Taxing for the animal welfare in our own cities and states, is a tax well used.

Make it mandatory that all shelters report the number of cats euthanized each month while in their care. Many of the shelters rely on donations. See how many of them help fund spay and neuter, not just preach it. PUBLIC AWARENESS ON A LOCAL LEVEL COULD CHANGE ONE SHELTER AT A TIME. Non profit organizations want your money to do with what they please. Learn what their practices are before you donate.

I agree that the killing of ferals should stop - trap, neuter, release is a much more humane solution. But many feral cats CAN be socialized (I have a pet cat right now who was formerly feral) so this is also an option.

This genocide must be stopped! I adopted a feral cat, born in the wild, who now loves nothing more than sit on my lap and make "biscuits!" They can in fact be socialized. Even if it were not possible to socialize them, exterminating them is not the answer.

personally i keep rescueing them but i am at my limit. as for killing them that is just plain sick and the people that do it should be strung up by their toes.

Killing unwanted animals is NOT the solution. We need to stop it at its source... the OVERBREEDING of pets is the cause. Why should these innocent animals be punished for acts that were committed by an irresponsible owner? How do you think the feral colonies started out? By irresponsible owners who failed to neuter their pets AND let them roam outside or even purposefully dumped the animals because they were no longer cute and cuddly and had grown from an adorable kitten to a big, gorgeous cat. I AM a proud pet owner and ALL of my animals are neutered and will never reproduce. We need to STOP THE KILLING and look for other solutions, like making it mandatory for EVERYONE to have their animal neutered or they could face a fine and stop the backyard breeding by only allowing serious breeders a special, expensive license to continue breeding. We have SO many animals and not enough homes and we NEED to stop killing them.

Find them a place to go. Not kill them. What give you the right to kill anything, decide when it dies???? Are you God???? No, you aren't. How do you sleep at night??? These cats did not EVER ask to be left outside, and be ferals. Just horrible how they are killed everyday, everywhere in the world. We should start putting people to sleep and tell me how painless it is. I have done studies regarding this matter. It is not painless and if it was, you still don't have the right to kill anyone. They deserve to live just as you do. STOP KILLING ANIMALS, THERE ARE SOLUTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You should be finding a place for these cats to live, not killing them. We as humans need to treat the earth's creatures better.. just because they cause a problem, isn't a reason for killing them.

We all should be so ashamed of ourselves, for not trying to find a more humane, compassionated solution to stop the killing. What are the possibilities of opening a modest shelter for the cats,to be spayed and neuter? Cruelty to animals is unacceptable,it makes us humans like monsters that do not care...IT is not RIGHT! If we all think with compassion, a kinder solution can be found PLEASE: DON`T KILL THE CATS!

I am opposed to any slaughter of animals and people like the Iowa mayor can't possibly care about animals to have them slaughtered for a bounty. Whata is happening to this world cruelty for money. There are better ways. take the 5 dollars and donate to have them fixed and released to take care of the rodents and snakes in the wild. Wake up you money hungry people and to have kids and adults slaughter animals for fun, how would they feel if someone took a bat to them and they could not fight back, or blow fumes up there nose to see how it feels. Iam really mad at these idiots.

I do everything I can. These little babies can be a challenge but they are so pathetic & die on the streets as well, this too is awful. I hope and I trust that the Human Society does all it can to find homes and otherwise offer comfort to [these]. I urge my friends to support local animal shelters, and to visit them occasionally to keep the caregivers there on their tippy toes and to keep the cats and all company.
