Support a New GI Bill

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America
Our veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan deserve every opportunity for re-integration.

After World War II, attending college gave veterans time to readjust to civilian life, and prepared them for careers as innovators and leaders. Not only that, but for every dollar spent on the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, seven dollars went back into the economy in the form of increased productivity, consumer spending, and tax revenue.

Today's GI Bill only covers 60% of the tuition at an average public university. Also, structural and bureaucratic delays discourage veterans from using their GI Bill benefits. Many forego education altogether.

The newest generation of veterans deserves real educational benefits that make college tuition affordable. Tell Congress to take action, and pass a 21st-century GI Bill.

Dear [Decision Maker],

A veteran of World War II was entitled to free tuition, books, and a living stipend that completely covered the cost of education. Attending college gave veterans time to readjust to civilian life, and prepared them for careers as innovators and leaders. For every dollar spent on the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, seven went back into the economy in the form of increased productivity, consumer spending, and tax revenue.

Many service members enlist in order to earn money for college, but today's GI Bill only covers part of the costs of college. Tuition costs have increased faster than inflation, and many veterans must take out student loans or forego education altogether. Even though 95% of veterans pay the non-refundable $1,200 to participate in the Montgomery GI Bill, 30% never use these benefits.

Four years of service at such a young age while putting college on hold is a sacrifice. Support our military with a new GI Bill.

Goddammit, can you not do the right thing for all these Heroes who are giving their aLL IN THIS SENSELESS WAR IN IRAQ!!! Trillions for the war, nothing for the soldiers who so bravely go in to secure the Bush/Cheney mentality!!!! New figures should be put out there for these GI's to get all they can in return for what they have AND are giving. It is time that this Bush adm. is held responsible for every aspect of need of every soldier who serves in "his war".

Because there efforts and labor should not be in vain. A better economy and budgeting can contribute to a booming raise of cash flow for troops who risk their life and for our country. Support groups in numbers can make it happen!

These people served our country. Make part of their compensation the opportunity to get a better education. Pay the tuition, books, and a stipend as long as they keep their grades up and progress toward an acceptable degree to improve their lives.

The new GI Bill is greatly needed by our men and women when they return from service. It is an investment that we benefit from to educate our society. The alternative eventually costs us more in homelessness, lack of education and healthcare.
