Support a New GI Bill

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America
Our veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan deserve every opportunity for re-integration.

After World War II, attending college gave veterans time to readjust to civilian life, and prepared them for careers as innovators and leaders. Not only that, but for every dollar spent on the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, seven dollars went back into the economy in the form of increased productivity, consumer spending, and tax revenue.

Today's GI Bill only covers 60% of the tuition at an average public university. Also, structural and bureaucratic delays discourage veterans from using their GI Bill benefits. Many forego education altogether.

The newest generation of veterans deserves real educational benefits that make college tuition affordable. Tell Congress to take action, and pass a 21st-century GI Bill.

Dear [Decision Maker],

A veteran of World War II was entitled to free tuition, books, and a living stipend that completely covered the cost of education. Attending college gave veterans time to readjust to civilian life, and prepared them for careers as innovators and leaders. For every dollar spent on the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, seven went back into the economy in the form of increased productivity, consumer spending, and tax revenue.

Many service members enlist in order to earn money for college, but today's GI Bill only covers part of the costs of college. Tuition costs have increased faster than inflation, and many veterans must take out student loans or forego education altogether. Even though 95% of veterans pay the non-refundable $1,200 to participate in the Montgomery GI Bill, 30% never use these benefits.

So many kids from lower income families and young people of color join the military because of the opportunities they see that would not ordinarily be available to them. One of these benefits for their servitude is education. For the record, I vehemently oppose this war--as a matter of fact, all war. But in the interest of reparation, this is the way I'd like to support the military--via education and health care. It's the least that can be done for the volunteerism of servicemen and women from disadvantaged circumstances. They don't need to be lied to any more in terms of racial and economic equality in this country. The military should keep its promises especially to this segment of the military.

WE SEND THESE PEOPLE OFF TO WAR, AND THEY FIGHT. ALL THEY ARE EQUIPPED TO DO IS FIGHT. THEY PROBABLY DON'T WANT A FUTURE OR ANYTHING! RIGHT?

I'm a Vietnam era vet and got my engineering degree with GI Bill benefits. Having a strong GI Bill will be an incentive for enlistments and an appropriate award for sacrifices of serving honorably.

Educational training for our veterans is, not only a thank you, but also a way to assimilate them back into the economy. Please pass a new GI bill.

Hell, yes. All of my father's friends benefited from the G.I. Bill after WWII, and while everyone deserves education, this would go some ways toward compensating the hidden costs of being a soldier. And as stated, benefit society and our economy...

We expect our military to protect our interests here as well on foreign soil and give them nothing in return. They put their lives on hold to serve and we give their jobs and education benefits to illegals.

Our soldiers should be compensated in every way possible for the sacrifices they VOLUNTEER to make. A new GI bill is a step in the right direction.

Since Viet Nam, we have seen a large percentage of homeless and disabled people without the resources to survive with success and dignity. Improving the GI Bill would help the already growing numbers of returning GI's who went into the service with minimal skills, and now are returning with the traumas of war, into a very competitive job market in a struggling economy. The percent of soldiers with unmet needs/skills is expected to be quite high. The GI Bill could make a huge dent into this problem, minimizing the numbers of people who would otherwise go on welfare, public assistance, housing, and other expensive programs.
