Support a New GI Bill

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America
Our veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan deserve every opportunity for re-integration.

After World War II, attending college gave veterans time to readjust to civilian life, and prepared them for careers as innovators and leaders. Not only that, but for every dollar spent on the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, seven dollars went back into the economy in the form of increased productivity, consumer spending, and tax revenue.

Today's GI Bill only covers 60% of the tuition at an average public university. Also, structural and bureaucratic delays discourage veterans from using their GI Bill benefits. Many forego education altogether.

The newest generation of veterans deserves real educational benefits that make college tuition affordable. Tell Congress to take action, and pass a 21st-century GI Bill.

Dear [Decision Maker],

A veteran of World War II was entitled to free tuition, books, and a living stipend that completely covered the cost of education. Attending college gave veterans time to readjust to civilian life, and prepared them for careers as innovators and leaders. For every dollar spent on the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, seven went back into the economy in the form of increased productivity, consumer spending, and tax revenue.

Many service members enlist in order to earn money for college, but today's GI Bill only covers part of the costs of college. Tuition costs have increased faster than inflation, and many veterans must take out student loans or forego education altogether. Even though 95% of veterans pay the non-refundable $1,200 to participate in the Montgomery GI Bill, 30% never use these benefits.

As a veteran of WWII who benefitted from the GI Bill for that war, I cannot imagine that there would be any dissenting voices. Further, it was generallly considered that the GI Bill of WWII was a bargain for the country as a whole. The benefits for the country as a whole were much greater than the cost.

The least we can do is give full educational opportunities to those who have risked their lives on our behalf.

My parents both benefited from the GI bill, and made useful contributions to society because of their education. Don't short-change this generation after the offering they have made of themselves.

you can't cage an animal for a long period of time and expect it to go out and make it on it's own or expect a huge change in men either.

Troops that leave active duty after there obligation should get free college in any state. Lokk at the price we have paid, 4,000 and 30,000 wounded. It's yime for change and major improvements in the GI Bill

The GI bill afforded the opportunity for many veterans to attend college. We need to update the bill and give our current and future armed services veterans to have updated benefits of a new GI Bill.
