Support a New GI Bill

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America
Our veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan deserve every opportunity for re-integration.

After World War II, attending college gave veterans time to readjust to civilian life, and prepared them for careers as innovators and leaders. Not only that, but for every dollar spent on the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, seven dollars went back into the economy in the form of increased productivity, consumer spending, and tax revenue.

Today's GI Bill only covers 60% of the tuition at an average public university. Also, structural and bureaucratic delays discourage veterans from using their GI Bill benefits. Many forego education altogether.

The newest generation of veterans deserves real educational benefits that make college tuition affordable. Tell Congress to take action, and pass a 21st-century GI Bill.

Dear [Decision Maker],

A veteran of World War II was entitled to free tuition, books, and a living stipend that completely covered the cost of education. Attending college gave veterans time to readjust to civilian life, and prepared them for careers as innovators and leaders. For every dollar spent on the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, seven went back into the economy in the form of increased productivity, consumer spending, and tax revenue.

Many service members enlist in order to earn money for college, but today's GI Bill only covers part of the costs of college. Tuition costs have increased faster than inflation, and many veterans must take out student loans or forego education altogether. Even though 95% of veterans pay the non-refundable $1,200 to participate in the Montgomery GI Bill, 30% never use these benefits.

Our GI's deserve an updated, and more comprehensive bill. They make tremendous sacrifices for our country, and our country needs to do the right thing by them.

How can we not give our women & men in the Armed Service a new GI Bill? They have interrupted their lives for our country and deserve to finish their education and/or train for another position. They deserve and need all the help and support we can give them. I can't believe that we are even discussing this. Where is our sense of justice, care and appreciation?

As a daughter of an American WWII Vet, I believe our service men & women deserve better treatment from the American Govt. and add my support to the new G.I. Bill!

How can anyone not know why our military should not what they deserve. Give them what they need instead of taking their minds after being in this war that was brought on by you know who. Of course they need this, not only do they need it, they deserve this and all else they receive.

I want to "support the troops" by paying them the debt we owe them. They deserve the same "G.I.Bill" benefits that WWII soldiers received. Forget the Iraqi's and take care of our own.

The old GI bill was a magnificent piece of legislation for the returning vets of ww2. Keep it the same for these members of the mililtary. Don't reward their service less than 100% equivalent to what the first GIs received.

I know how hard and long it's taken for my son to get his GI Bill moeny for college, it's taken a financial toll on him, but the military made him tough and he stuck it out. Funding shouldn't be this tough. Lets make it better!

We need the experience of the veterans in our schools and in good jobs with thankfulness and a full tuition granted to each who is willing to pursue higher education.

An America I can be proud of is an America that's proud to stand up for it's military. We owe our freedom to them. We also owe them an education if the want one.

I can't believe this great country would not support a new GI Bill! Seeing that the current one is failing today's veterans! It is important to educate our society and who more deserving then the men and women that have served to protect it? Installing a new GI Bill would benefit us and our society in the long run.

Many of our GI's went to service because they had no future. Give them everything they need to secure one now, after they have given their service. Better yet, give every American who wants it, full, free education. A brain drained America is a brain dead America.

This would pay for itself in ten years by increased income and children adequately cared for. (And given a good example)

Times have changed. It's time the government started giving useable perks to those who fight to keep our freedom instead of taking them away. Combat is traumatic and those who think someone can come home and move right into civilian life without a period of adjustment is highly disallusioned. Our soldiers deserve all the assistance our government can afford, and the government can afford anything.

Education is the key to returning/understanding theirselves and becoming productive in a way that assists them/we and the nation. The GI Bill is just a given/give it to them. I believe that is what the advertisements used to say....earn money for college...well they earned it.
