Support a New GI Bill

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America
Our veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan deserve every opportunity for re-integration.

After World War II, attending college gave veterans time to readjust to civilian life, and prepared them for careers as innovators and leaders. Not only that, but for every dollar spent on the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, seven dollars went back into the economy in the form of increased productivity, consumer spending, and tax revenue.

Today's GI Bill only covers 60% of the tuition at an average public university. Also, structural and bureaucratic delays discourage veterans from using their GI Bill benefits. Many forego education altogether.

The newest generation of veterans deserves real educational benefits that make college tuition affordable. Tell Congress to take action, and pass a 21st-century GI Bill.

Dear [Decision Maker],

A veteran of World War II was entitled to free tuition, books, and a living stipend that completely covered the cost of education. Attending college gave veterans time to readjust to civilian life, and prepared them for careers as innovators and leaders. For every dollar spent on the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, seven went back into the economy in the form of increased productivity, consumer spending, and tax revenue.

Many service members enlist in order to earn money for college, but today's GI Bill only covers part of the costs of college. Tuition costs have increased faster than inflation, and many veterans must take out student loans or forego education altogether. Even though 95% of veterans pay the non-refundable $1,200 to participate in the Montgomery GI Bill, 30% never use these benefits.
We signed the “Support a New GI Bill” petition!

I am an Iraq war veteran and currently a senior at East Carolina University. I served in the USMC for 5 years prior to attending college on the GI Bill. Although I am very grateful for receiving financial assistance through the GI Bill, it is simply not enough to finance my education at this State school. I currently have a 4.0 cumulative GPA and am approximately 20 semester hours from a degree but, since my GI Bill has ran out I must decide to either take out loans I cant afford to pay or take a break from school to work to finish my education. To me it just seems to make sense that if we are to spend our tax payers money on something it may as well be invested in those that fought for our freedoms. In addition scholarships for veterans themselves are limited and those available are more oriented toward the dependents of those that served. The bottom line is that something needs to be done to close the cost disparities between the GI Bill amount and the price of a State college education, whether it comes in the form of an increase or 100% tuition coverage.

My son has been in the Army since 2001 he graduated from boot camp on 9/13/01. Yes just 2 days after that fateful day. I drove to his graduation because the airlines were down,.He has lived in complete danger everyday fighting for our rights. He deserves to be educated beyound what he is able to finacially do. He is a great leader of his men, and if he can go to college he will lead many more in the job market.

As a Soldier I've been to Iraq and am now in Afghanistan. I've given the past 7 years of my life to the USA. I like to think that I've proven my alligence to my country. Sure the Army takes care of me as far as food, water and a place to sleep, but how about after I get out? Yes, they offer 100% in tuition while I'm on active duty, but when do I have the time or the internet for that matter to even think about enrolling in school? The currnet MGIB is great, but with the price of college now a days it isn't enough for me to get an education. If someone has a problem with giving a little change to a servicemember than I recommend they take a look at where there alligence is.

We owe these people everything. If a veteran wants to go to college, their country should see to it that they do. This is the essence of support our troops, and voting yes on this is the pinnacle of patriotism.

As an Active Duty Airman who will soon be separating to pursue a higher education, I simply feel that today's M.G.I.B doesn't fully support the educational costs of a full time college student. I feel that veterans deserve more to help them get through school with one less thing to worry about (money).

Without the veterans of this country none of us would have the opportunity to get a college education. They made it possible for us to get an education so we owe it to them to give them the same chance! Let's make the GI Bill live up to its purpose once again!

This should be a slam dunk. It seems to be the least we can do when they are risking their lives and mental health for a war the government determined needed to be fought.

We should support our troops with a new GI bill because they desserve to have a life after they leave the service. After all, they fought and many of them were hurt and wounded for you and me and they deserve to be able to count on this country to take care of t hem. God Bless, LaWanda Harrison

These young men and women have served their country with honor and courage, and now they deserve our full support. Investing in a college education for our veterans is an investment in our society and our economy. We will all be the beneficiaries of helping our veterans to aim higher and achieve more!

I fully support the updating of a new GI Bill for our troops and veterans. It is long overdue and we need to help the men and women of our military who have served our country so honorably! So it's time for the Congress of the United States to quit dragging their feet and appove this new bill.

You asked these men and women to do a job that can get them killed or maimed and they do it with honor and pride. Give them the respect you want accorded yourselves. As my Representative I want you to support this bill. You do not have the military experience I have so it is difficult to understand their needs. Today's world requires higher education and these GI's are entitled to a better life for their service. Again -- Please vote to approve this bill. We've wasted enough money in Iraq to cover the expense. I am a registered voter, a veteran and I have a long memory

I am a Vet of WWll '43 -'46 in the ETO I gained my college degree under the G.I. Bill and thank God for the full four years or I never would have made it. We owe these young men a full four years plus and I pray you do what is right by them. Sincerely, C. Wayne Tucker

Oregon recently passed a bill that gives Reservists and National Guard members free tuition at state universities, however, active-duty members are still asked to pay. Where Reservists and National Guard have their tuition paid and then receive G.I. Bill benefits on top of that, the only thing active-duty members have to fall back on is the G.I. Bill... which runs out short of the completion of a college education.

I am hoping to attend a prestigious university following my 8 years in the Marine Corps. The G.I. bill will only carry a fraction of the cost at schools like Northwestern or University of Chicago. The vets deserve a better stepping stone to begin with once their service has been "honorably" completed.

Once these service members are discharged they will need education to fall back on. In today's society you have to have certain qualifications to get a decent job!

We owe it to our troops. The original intent of the Montgomery GI bill was to pay for a college education for service members that went to war. Not to partially pay for an education. Service members who use these funds (what few) still have thousands in student loans to pay off after using the GI bill funds. Major reform is long past due.

I think this is a great program that can be extremely beneficial to the many soldiers that are returning from Iraq. They are putting their lives at risk to protect our country and the many freedoms which we have. This is a small way in which we could repay them for the sacrifices they have made and positively impact their lives.

My husband is a Viet Nam veteran and has benefitted from the GI bill. Some may argue that the GI bill was a type of compensation because the young men were drafted and did not have a choice but to serve. I think the GI bill is still relevant because the armed forces of today is all volunteer. This should be a special reward for the men and women who decided to dedicate their lives to the defense of our country.
