Each year, thousands of sea turtles choke on plastic bags after mistaking them for jellyfish, a favorite food.
Leatherback turtles have been around for 100 million years, but if changes are not made for these turtles, they could be wiped out from the Pacific Ocean in just ten more years.
Did you know that between 4 and 5 trillion plastic bags are used each year globally, and each one can take between 500 to 1000 years to decompose?
Moreover, other sea critters like sea lions and dolphins have also been found with their stomachs filled with plastic bags!
By reducing plastic bag use and recycling or reusing plastic bags, everyone can help these ancient creatures.
Sign the pledge below to signify your commitment to reduce your plastic bag use, and add a comment to share your ideas on how.
We signed the “Save Sea Turtles from Extinction - Take the Plastic Bag Pledge” petition!

It's amazing that here in South Africa - a third world country (supposedly) they have been charging customers in the grocery stores for purchasing plastic bags for a few years now. The stores provide their own recyclable cloth type bags for purchase, which you bring back with you each time to re-use. Imagine if, for instance, my own country (USA) would do that and I KNOW the UK would benefit immensely if they instituted such a policy as well, in some parts they have what I liked to call plastic bag trees - the plastic bag litter is atrocious in some parts! It's a fantastic idea, which helps the environment, cuts down on wastage/trash, AND litter on the streets! I will continue to use my recyclable bags PLUS not take bags for small items that are easily carried from the shops that still use plastic without charging you (department/gift stores).

We use cloth bags & boxes where we can, & if we cant avoid plastic we resue as many times as we can & then recycle as much as we can. Small change, big difference!
