In the end of January, the Humane Society of the United States released a horrific undercover video of gross mistreatment of cows at the Westland/Hallmark Meat Company in California.
The video showed non-ambulatory (or "downer") cows being shoved, shocked and forced to stand up in order to pass federal slaughterhouse inspection. Meat from these "downer" cows presents a higher risk of E. coli and salmonella and is banned from entering the food supply under federal law.
Shockingly, this company is one of the top suppliers of beef to the National School Lunch Program! This potentially unsafe meat that comes from abused animals could have gone to feed our children at school.
U.S. Reps. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), George Miller (D-CA), Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) and Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) have submitted a letter to the Government Accountability Office, asking for thorough examination of three main areas:

I am speaking for the animals involved. I am requesting better living conditions for all farmanimals, kind, humane treatment, safe humane transport, and no more abuse to cause the animals to suffer. Get them out of crowded living conditions so they can exhibit natural behaviors such as pecking, grazing, walking, wing flapping, stretching, and socailize amongst the animal environment. Safe huimane treatment of milk production and breeding. Clean habitat aresa free of feces, germs, and bacteria. No hormones to increase size. Animals should be fed food from their natural diet and shouldn't be genetically enhanced in any manner. I watched a movie about animal abuse and mistreatment and I was appalled by what I saw. No being should have to endure those living conditions and the abuse that I witnessed causing that much pain, suffering, and torture. How do these people live with themselves without shame or guilt for the horrible acts they do to animals who don't deserve or undertsand these acts? I encourage undercover, investigative actions be taken against these farms of horror!!!

I know all animal abuse in unwarranted as all sentient beings have a right to exist and fulfill their purposes on this planet. Those who choose to engage in animal abuses need to look at themselves deeply as we are all part of the animal kingdom. It has been said that animal abuse can also lead to violent activities towards humans and others during the course of one's life.

I am so sad that people are so inhumane. I personally gave up meat over a year ago as I could no longer stand the idea of eating animals that were handled so cruely. I personally would not want people like that working for me, with me, nor around me. I hope that you have seen these videos although my hunch is you dont care; and that you have fired those abusers. They are sick people. It is only time before they look at humans life the same way and I would not want to be the person that perpetuated this link. Pamela Pinta
