In the end of January, the Humane Society of the United States released a horrific undercover video of gross mistreatment of cows at the Westland/Hallmark Meat Company in California.
The video showed non-ambulatory (or "downer") cows being shoved, shocked and forced to stand up in order to pass federal slaughterhouse inspection. Meat from these "downer" cows presents a higher risk of E. coli and salmonella and is banned from entering the food supply under federal law.
Shockingly, this company is one of the top suppliers of beef to the National School Lunch Program! This potentially unsafe meat that comes from abused animals could have gone to feed our children at school.
U.S. Reps. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), George Miller (D-CA), Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) and Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) have submitted a letter to the Government Accountability Office, asking for thorough examination of three main areas:

I would like the people doing this to these helpless cows to be shocked and kicked on their death beds like these helpless animals are. They are intelligent and have feelings. How can a human so violently treat another being? I urge Hallmark meats to change the practice of animal care and treatment. It saddens me that greed can push people to inflict pain on animals - creatures that are put here to sustain us. They should not have to endure pain and suffering, but should be well fed, watered, and housed until they are slaughtered. There is no need for this inhumane treatment of animals and the company, executive officers especially, should be held accountable to what is going on. They are the leaders of that organization and are accountable, right down to the man prodding the poor animals along with the fork-lift. They keep doing this type of treatment and people will not want to eat meat at all. Then what will these people do for a living?

It's absolutely DISGUSTING. The men/women working in the slaughterhouses should be burned and skinned alive so they can feel the pain too. They should also drink blood and have brooms shoved up their A**es. There is no good reason for the brutality that goes on in these slaughterhouses.
