In the end of January, the Humane Society of the United States released a horrific undercover video of gross mistreatment of cows at the Westland/Hallmark Meat Company in California.
The video showed non-ambulatory (or "downer") cows being shoved, shocked and forced to stand up in order to pass federal slaughterhouse inspection. Meat from these "downer" cows presents a higher risk of E. coli and salmonella and is banned from entering the food supply under federal law.
Shockingly, this company is one of the top suppliers of beef to the National School Lunch Program! This potentially unsafe meat that comes from abused animals could have gone to feed our children at school.
U.S. Reps. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), George Miller (D-CA), Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) and Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) have submitted a letter to the Government Accountability Office, asking for thorough examination of three main areas:

Now people are safe from the diseases that abused cows can pass on to us ... which does nothing for the welfare of the animals!! The objectives should be not only that diseases are not passed on but that the animals should not feel pain either. Doing half a job says that you are only doing what you think will satisfy the protesters and not what is the necessary, humane, and outright right thing to do.

It is cruel to torture an injured, ill or exhausted animal just to make it stand up & move, all for the sake of money. How would that person or persons like the same treatment; then it would be a different story. An animal has feelings just like a human, the only difference is they can not speak for themselves. I saw that horrific video and it brings tears to my eyes every time I see the brutal practice of anyone treating a defenseless animal in the way those people treated those cows! I was part of "Yes on 204" in Arizona and We Won! There will be no more gestation crates for pigs and timy crates for calves and it should be a federal ban on those types of conditions for any animals!
