In the end of January, the Humane Society of the United States released a horrific undercover video of gross mistreatment of cows at the Westland/Hallmark Meat Company in California.
The video showed non-ambulatory (or "downer") cows being shoved, shocked and forced to stand up in order to pass federal slaughterhouse inspection. Meat from these "downer" cows presents a higher risk of E. coli and salmonella and is banned from entering the food supply under federal law.
Shockingly, this company is one of the top suppliers of beef to the National School Lunch Program! This potentially unsafe meat that comes from abused animals could have gone to feed our children at school.
U.S. Reps. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), George Miller (D-CA), Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) and Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) have submitted a letter to the Government Accountability Office, asking for thorough examination of three main areas:

- How quickly and accurately schools can assess and pull potentially contaminated products, and

Somehow, this country, through greed and laziness has failed to farm in the moral and ethical manner when livestock was valued and revered.There was a sacred bond with the animals that provided your livelihood and sustenance for your family and community.With the "factory farms" there is no accountability, no morals, no mercy.We need to go back to the way farms are meant to be, or you will see more cases of mad cow, more cases of alleged sexual abuse of animals at the Butterball Turkey Farm.The things that are going on are depraved and indifferent to life itself and we demand action.Do you know what's being served to you and your family on YOUR table tonight?Think about it.

I think the beef recall was totally necessary not just for the children but first and foremost for the animals in this situation. We need to start thinking of what the animals need also and not just the human beings.

Human beings are the cruelest beings on earth, and this one example is fueled by greed and the almighty dollar. I hope that plant never re-opens, and that the government will take a look at the rest of the meat producers in the country.

There is absolutely no excuse for the subhuman behavior of those caught abusing cattle doomed to be slaughtered. The entire meat industry needs an overhaul and consumers need to be educated about the whole ugly meat processing business. This horrific, cruel abuse of animals must stop immediately. The best way to protect both children and animals is to drastically decrease the demand for meat.
