The House Appropriations Committee is poised to spend $27 million more than last year -- a total of $140 million -- on abstinence-only programs (specifically for CBAE---Community Based Abstinence Education programs). And the Senate Subcommittee will be considering whether or not to fund abstinence-only programs at all.
Yes, these are the same programs that time and again have been proven to NOT positively impact the sexual behaviors of young people (and can, in fact, contribute to an increased risk). Abstinence-only promotes scientifically inaccurate information and withholds crucial information about HIV/STI and pregnancy prevention.
The House Appropriations Committee, led by Democrat David Obey, will be meeting soon to consider this bill. The Senate subcommittee is set to consider their bill in July.
It is unconscionable for our representatives to play into the politics of abstinence only programming, rather than paying attention to the public health evidence.
Please tell the members of both the House and Senate Appropriations Committees that you stand with the overwhelming majority (82%) of Americans who support giving young people all the facts.
We signed the “Tell House and Senate Committee Members to end Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage” petition!

I am tired of funding programs that do not work. Abstinence only does not work. Be realistic.

"Just Say No" didn't work to prevent drug use either. How about educating our youth with medically accurate and complete information and trusting them a little.

Young people deserve all the facts and options when making such an important decision as that to have sex. Abstinence-only education is deceptive and dangerous.

Only medically accurate, evidence based, comprehensive sexuality education, that includes both information on abstinence and risk reduction are effective in delaying first intercourse, and ensuring the use of condoms or contraceptives when intersourse is initiated. The expectation of abstinence until marriage is a fine and noble value, but let us not place that value paramount to the health, safety, and well being of our youth.

We need to give kids the facts of life, not create a make-believe world! This money would better fund preventative measures than abstinence.

What is the goverments problem? The facts are in and the public is against it. So why continue to fund a program that does not work and more than enough people don't like?!?!?

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result... Abstinence only sex education does NOT work for the majority of children! Let's give them a fighting chance to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancy and STDs and give them facts!

Government should be pragmatic about sex education. Evaluate what really works and fund that. Don't continue with a program based on a moralistic ideal that does not work in real world.
