Stop Puppy Mills - Five Things You Can Do

Target: You!
Sponsored by: ASPCA

Thinking of getting a dog this year? We've all been tempted by the cute puppy in the pet store window. But before you give in to the temptation and buy that furry bundle of joy, there are some things you should know.

For one, that puppy most likely came from a large-scale, substandard commercial breeding operation, commonly known as a puppy mill. Puppy mills usually house dogs in overcrowded and often unsanitary conditions, without adequate veterinary care, food, water and socialization. The breeding stocks at puppy mills (possibly your new puppy's mom and dad) are bred as often as possible in order to increase profits. In fact, the living conditions and treatment of these dogs can be downright horrific.

But you can help. Pledge to stop puppy mills by being a responsible consumer and pet parent.

THE PLEDGE

I pledge to do what I can to stop puppy mills by being a responsible consumer and pet parent. I will be mindful of the following guidelines:

1. Not to Buy From a Pet Store
That puppy who charmed you through the pet shop window has most likely come from a large-scale, substandard commercial breeding facility, commonly known as a puppy mill. In these facilities, parent dogs are caged and bred as often as possible, and give birth to puppies who could have costly medical problems you might not become aware of until after you bring your new pet home.

2. To Make Adoption My First Option
If you're looking to make a puppy part of your family, check your local shelters first. Not only will you be saving a life, but you will ensure that your money is not going to support a puppy mill. There are many dogs waiting for homes in shelters all across the country--and an estimated one in four is a purebred!

3. To Know How to Recognize a Responsible Breeder
If you've exhausted your options for adopting and are choosing to buy from a breeder, remember that responsible breeders have their dogs' interests in mind. They are not simply interested in making a sale, but in placing their pups in good homes. A responsible breeder should screen you as thoroughly as you screen them!

he was rescued from life on the streets, after he had been hit by a car. Luckily a cat lover bothered to check on him, not just assume he was dead and saved him. They fostered him back to good health and I adopted him. 7 years later, he's happy and healthy, living a good life (he's spoiled rotten).

All of our cats but two were strays who wandered into our lives and demanded homes. The other two were the daughter of one of the strays and the son of a classmate's cat. Our dog also wandered in to our yard one day and asked for a nice home. If my family is ever looking for a pet (they tend to find us rather than let us decide that there isn't enough chaos in the house), we will go to a shelter or rescue group.

Shelters and an irresponsible puppy mill - My cats were shelter kittens and my dog was an extremely ill puppy that was close to death when we got her - she is happy and healthy today but where she came from was horrible.

Sorry to say from a pet store. Fortunately after 5 years there have been no health problems and I wouldn't trade my dog for anything.

my daughter and I rescued my almost one year old chi/terrier's mummy from an abusive home thru craigslist, the people actually demanded we give her back. unfortuantly after she gave birth to two beautiful pup females, Harley and Diamond she was hit by a car. i could never, sigh its just amazing what people will do to animals, pets who want nothing more than love from humans.

My roommate heard that two cats were to be dropped off at the pound and he asked if I would be willing to take them in. We each kept one.

All of my dogs have come to me in their time of need. One stumbled onto our lawn during a yard sale, starving and frightened. Another denied surgery as a tiny puppy by their breeder to remove a foxtail. Another from the desert. And another who had escaped from an Indian Reservation where dog fighting is practiced.
