Tell the EPA to Keep Information about Toxic Pollution Public

Target: Stephen L. Johnson, Administrator, Environmental Protection Agency
Sponsored by: Union of Concerned Scientists
We think American citizens have a right to know what toxic chemicals are being released into their local communities.

But the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced plans to significantly limit the information that companies are required to disclose about their release of hazardous chemicals – including toxins like mercury, lead, and dioxin — into our environment.

Through its plan to reduce the reporting requirements of its Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) program, the EPA is proposing to take away an important tool for protecting public health and our environment. In its 20 years in existence, the TRI has provided the public with critical information about chemical contaminants that pose a serious threat to our health, while simultaneously providing incentives for companies to reduce their pollution levels.

There is no justification for weakening this successful program today, other than to please large corporate polluters, who view public disclosure as a costly nuisance. That's why we must send a strong message to the Bush Administration that this is unacceptable public policy in a democracy!

The EPA is accepting public comments only until January 13, 2005. Please take a moment to oppose this misguided and dangerous proposal and be included in the public record!

Dear Administrator Johnson and EPA staff:

I am writing regarding Docket ID No. TRI-2005-0073.

I am concerned by the EPA's proposed changes to the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) program. For almost 20 years, the TRI program has been successful in making communities around the country safer and healthier by providing critical information on the toxic chemicals released into our land, water, and air.

Raising the reporting threshold to 10 times its current level, moving from annual reporting to every other year reporting, and allowing for less-detailed reporting on persistent, bioaccumlative, and toxic (PBT) chemicals poses a significant threat to our nation's health, safety, and environmental quality. As the United States responds to the effects of Hurricane Katrina, the EPA should recognize that there is a need for sufficient reporting on toxic chemicals released into our environment.

American citizens should retain the right to know what toxic chemicals are being released in their communities. I strongly urge the EPA to abandon all of its burden reduction proposals in the docket TRI-2005-0073 and to withdraw its plans to move from an annual to a biennial reporting system.

Sincerely,
[your name]

I share the concerns others have expressed here about maintaining our right to be informed of pollutants released into our communities. But I also worry as an environmental historian, since the kind of information amassed in Toxic Release Inventories is indispensable to my research. Without strong standards of corporate record-keeping and accountability we will lose our understanding of the past as well as our chance for a cleaner and more equitable future.

Not in my neighborhood! Releasing toxins has damaged our health. We lived in Anniston, Alabama, site of PCB's and called the most toxic city in the US. My son will remain on medication for life due to PCB's once deemed safe... Prior to 1991, there was no therapy for his condition. His medication, rDNA cost $2,600.00 a month. Again, please consider who you are hurting... Children

As GW systematically rescends all safe guards installed by the previous administration, we all will find ourselves at risk in the coming years. Therefore, it is almost mandatory that we have a red flag waved before we croak.

As a tax payer, homeowner ( due to Katrina no longer do I have a home which was paid for)and mother of two sons. I think I deserve to know what kind of toxin are in my St Bernard Parish Community. Let's face it our Parish Gov ernment is telling people to come back andlive in the parish, yet they will not be honest and tell us want is in the soil or water after Katrina. If EPA is honest with the people, and these people decide to return to a community, it would be on them, they would not beable to blame the EPA for what may happen to them in the future. Honesty is what we all need, Like they say the truth hurts sometimes, but it can also help you to make a wise decision for your family.

I believe I have a right to know what is going on in my community. This is where my and my family's livelihood exists. No one should have to worry about what toxins are in our air. You are charged with protecting the citizenry. Air quality effects everything. Do not allow rules and regulations to become more lax than they already are. Our future depends on it AND YOU!!!!!

please keep information on toxic pollution public. It is our right to know about impurities being put into our enviroment. Don't forget, you live on this planet too and you are subject to the same pollution as everyone else. Wouldn't you like to have knowledge about what toxins may be affecting you and your family?

Everyone has the right to know at all times what they are drinking, eating, and breathing and it should be healthy, not polluted. It is crazy to weaken these regulations on pollutors.

Our health is the major thing we need to preserve. How can we keep healthy if toxins are continuously released, and we are not warned? It's bad enough that GMO products (corn syruy, soy bean oil, etc) are put in almost every product in a grocery store, why must we be bombarded with toxins too?

There are too many pollutants released into our airspace, our waterways and even our precious drinking water due to companies who just want to make a buck. These are the same individuals who are polluting without regard to safety of our domestic animals who are unable to go inside to breathe recycled air from airconditioners. The plants and all who release chemicals into "our space" should be totally required to let us know what they are doing, not let us find out when we are dying from what they didn't let us protect ourselves from. WHO ARE THEY TO MAKE THESE DECISIONS WITHOUT THE MAJORITY CONSENT??
