Farmed salmon raises human health concerns and also environmental risks

Human Health Concerns
In what is considered the most thorough analysis of farmed and wild salmon to date, a study released in the respected journal Science in January 2004 found that, in most cases, consuming more than one serving of farmed salmon per month could pose unacceptable cancer risks, according to United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for determining safe fish consumption levels.

Environmental Risks
Recent research published in the internationally renowned Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences revealed that the number of sea lice on young wild salmon is higher in areas near salmon farms. The report demonstrated a link between sea lice from fish farms and the decline of certain wild salmon stocks in Canada's Pacific Ocean.

Salmon farming poses risks of disease transfer to wild fish and escapes of farmed salmon into the wild. Waste from the farms including antibiotics, pesticides and harmful chemicals are released into the ocean. Often fish farms are located directly in areas where First Nations or other communities object.

In light of these concerns and recent findings, it is difficult to understand how major retailers like Safeway continue to stock farmed salmon. If you care about your health and the environment, please sign this petition to send a free fax to Safeway. Tell Safeway that you won't buy farmed salmon until these health and environmental concerns have been met!

Dear Mr. Burd,

I am writing to express my concern over the sale of farmed salmon at Safeway. A study published this January in the respected journal Science found that, in most cases, consuming more than one serving of farmed salmon per month could pose unacceptable cancer risks, according to the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for determining safe fish consumption levels.

[Your comments: State your concerns over the health impacts of farmed salmon]

In light of these results, I urge you to act in the best interest of your customers and remove farmed salmon from your stores. Healthy and sustainable seafood alternatives to farmed salmon, such as wild salmon or halibut, are available and I ask that you offer these products instead of farmed salmon.

[Your comments: Discuss why Safeway should not sell farmed salmon]

I will only purchase farmed salmon from companies that use farming practices and technology that: Eliminate the risk of disease transfer to wild fish and escapes of salmon into the wild; Prevent fish farm waste from being released into the ocean; Label all farmed fish so consumers can make informed choices; Use fish feed that does not result in a global loss of seafood for human consumption; Use fish feed that does not result in unsafe levels of contaminates in farmed salmon; Ensure that wildlife is not harmed as a result of fish farming; prohibit the use of genetically modified fish; eliminate the use of antibiotics, biocides and harmful chemicals in fish farming; respect the views of coastal residents and do not locate farms where First Nations or other communities object.

I will not buy farmed salmon from Safeway until the many health and environmental problems have been solved. I would appreciate and expect a reply to my concerns.

Sincerely,
We signed the “Let Safeway know you won't buy farmed salmon!” petition!

Common sense tells that when we take living beings and subject them to concentration camp like confinement, plus pump them full of chemicals and allow their waste to concentrate in the oceans, this will wreak havok upon every life touched by this interdependent food chain. Farmed salmon are a danger to human health, the water, and of course, the sentient beings themselves! (I am not a vegetarian, but I ONLY eat animals who have been allowed to exist in ethical conditions!).

As evidenced by the growth of the organic food industry, people are becoming more and more aware of the connections between food and personal and environmental health. Yes, some people may mot want to pay a few dollars more for fish, but awareness of this critical issue is spreading and people are real-eyesing that expensive fish is nothing compared to the costs of getting sick and drinking polluted water!

I am not only worried about the possible health risks of eating farmed salmon myself but also the risk to the wild stocks of salmon. In any process like this of farming a wild creature first and foremost we must look at what the benefits and in this case disadvantages there are for the wild stock. If it is not going to be the best thing for the wild salmon we shouldn't be doing it.

It's up to the big companies to take stand against and use some of their vast financial resources to make a positive investment in the environmental future of the planet.Obviously the consumer votes with their dollar but a little help for those who don't know any better would go a long way.

Higher concentrations of Mercury are found in farmed salmon.

Safeway should only sell wild salmon.

My older daughter is recovering from thyroid cancer. We all are terribly concerned about carcinogenics.

We look to Safeway to be responsible and accountable. You must help us to help ourselves. Do not sell dangerous farmed salmon.

I shop at Safeway all the time, and I buy salmon from small shops because Safeway usually only has farm salmon, which I will not eat.

Because it takes away from us and nature.

Recent research indicates that consuming more than one serving of farmed salmon per month could pose unacceptable cancer risks. Another report demonstrates a link between sea lice from fish farms and the decline of certain wild salmon stocks in the Pacific. Salmon farming poses risks of disease transfer to wild fish. Wastes from these farms, including antibiotics, pesticides and harmful chemicals, are released into the ocean. Fish farming is a short-sighted solution to a problem (scarcity of fish) that has resulted from unsustainable fishing practices. (Overfishing!) Fish farming produces pollutants, weakens the genetic integrity of the fish stocks, and threatens the health and existence of the remaining wild salmon populations.

As stated earlier by Ms. Johnsgard, "The real power to change the system lies in the hands of distributors and consumers who ultimately vote with the dollar.".

Clean up the rest of the slaughter houses and animals farms where food is produced and contaminated then when you can get that right, then pursue new ventures such as this one.

This should not be done because of contamination and sloppy regulations. When the "powers that be" can finally get a handle on this problem, then bring it back up for review, in the meantime, deal with the "white elephant" that already exists.

U just don't know what parasites etc. r in these salmon no matter how careful one is in raising them it's in the water and food they eat.

How do they know exactly how safe the salmon is that they get? i much prefer the "wild" salmon fishing and taste of them.

My main problem with food in general is that we do not know anymore what we are eating. I rarely eat meat or fish, although not a real vegetarian, simply because I do no longer trust how the animals are bred/fed.

As we speak there are millions of people/children dying of starvation, yet in our western continents there is massive overproduction, leading to food being thrown away. What's more, especially bred food is not necessarilly contributing to its quality. Animal bred like that are under a lot of stress in cages that are far too little, most certainly not resulting in good, tasty and healthy food. Please, we cannot eat all you produce, so please give the animals a better life, as short as it may be.

If we are to farm these fish they must be raised with good quality healthy feed, miminal impacts on the wild fish, and a fully researched sustainable process. Once again, Organic Standards would be the answer.

#1 Does not taste good. #2 Not safe to eat due to contamination by heavy metals. #3 Is not good bussiness to sell toxic fish that tastes bad.

Farmed salmon is contaminated and raised in poorly engineered and environmentally damaging ways. Our merchants must behave in responsible ways.

I spend allot of time making sure what my family and I eat is clean and healthy, I do enjoy fish from time to time, and do not want to be contaminated by farmed salmon, also the practice of farming salmon for food produces an unacceptable ammount of polution.

You'll be wasting your invested money when few if anybody will purchase the salmon.

Aquaculture is a short-sighted solution to a scarcity that is really due to unsustainable fishing practices. it generates pollution and endangers the health and viability of native aquatic populations.

The real power to change the system lies in the hands of distributors and consumers who ultimately vote with the dollar.

Why is it that the need for greed never takes into account the long term costs- even for the greedy? We will ALL be effected by what happens to the planet.

Can Safeway afford the potential future litigation which would come on the heels of KNOWINGLY selling diseased/inferior food stuffs?

Offering the choice of wild salmon (over farm raised salmon) allows your consumers to make choices that support their health.

There are enough cancer causing agents that we can not prevent in our daily enviroment to buy a product that also causes cancer.

Since eating more than 1 seving per month increases cancer risk it, criticle people who enjoy salmon are made aware of the health risk they're taking.

We have many different cancers, endometriosis, and many other odd diseases that have no cures. What are they trying to prove w/ this toxic salmon? We don't need anymore toxicity in our environment, especially in our food chain.

Farmed raised salmon is a potential hazard to our health. It should not be sold for human consumption.

# 4,408:

It is not the natural order of things & the impacts will reverberate! Why does humankind mess with the natural gifts provided by nature?! There is so much we've done to upset the natural balance of things, and we need to change our ways and let our earth heal! (and our people!).

If Safeway sells farmed salmon, they are supporting something that upsets the natural balance of nature, and are not taking steps to be part of any solutions to restore balance.

It's disgusting how governments permit practices which are known to be a health risk! Besides the fact that farmed salmon are, in all probability, treated in a cruel manner, it is unethical to allow this to continue.

No supermarket should sell farmed salmon however the powers that be, to include the government, will most likely continue to sell to unwitting people something that is poisonous to them and then raise our taxes because more and more people need to be treated for cancer.

As we in Canada have discovered out in British Columbia and other areas THIS IS NOT SOMETHING TO SUPPORT.

I will not buy any salmon farmed raised because of the health risk to wild salmon, which passes on to those who eat it both human and animal.

# 4,403:

Farmed salmon is not a healthy food and it is cruel to the fish. Wild salmon is much better.

As a major part of the food chain, Safeway should be a responsible citizen who respects its customers and offers high quality products to consumers.

I'm not an expert on the matter, but I have read the opinions of health experts, and who better to listen to than them. Their message is consistent. Eating more than just a small amount of farmed salmon per month is a health risk.

At the very least, Safeway should pose clear indications of the health risks on the farmed salmon products they sell. Consumers can then make their choice.
