An upcoming TV series, "Greatest Show on Earth", promises a "behind-the-scenes" look at the legendary Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. But the real story is that Circus staff regularly abuse and torment performing elephants with bull hooks, chains and other devices.
The abuse of Ringling Bros. circus elephants -- well documented by animal welfare organizations, state humane agencies, and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspectors -- violates both the federal Endangered Species Act and the Animal Welfare Act, which prohibit the abuse of endangered animals used in entertainment.
Many have witnessed routine violent abuse and cruelty toward the elephants, including frequently hitting the elephants with bull hooks, rubbing dirt into sores of elephants to conceal their wounds, and routinely chaining the elephants on concrete or in cramped rail cars for many hours of every day and night.
This kind of cruelty is not entertainment -- contact TNT and urge them to cancel the "Greatest Show on Earth" series.

Common sense should tell you that this is no kind of life for wild animals. Of course, they are beaten and abused and treated horribly, I mean 'duh'. Traveling around the country 50 weeks out of the year in cramped, filthy, nasty, hot or freezing boxcars. Don't be a Chump and a Dupe and a Shill for Ringling. I think you're smarter and better than that.

I have boycotted circuses for years now due to the horrific treatment experienced by these intelligent, social creatures who are unable to defend themselves. These animals live their lives in stressful, unnatural conditions. When, after years of abuse, an "enraged" elephant kills or maims someone it is killed. Why would anyone support this treatment of an animal?

There is no "greatest show on earth", it's merely to make money, which is all this country is about. But, as the so called "leaders" of this country, you can STOP THIS NOW. As long as there is a demand, people will not stop paying to see animals being abused and tortured. Why don't you, as our LEADERS stop this then?

I personally have never been nor will never bring my daughter to a circus with animals! I am a member of PETA and i am proud to teach my child about animal cruelty so she will grow up to respect and help animals! Save the elephants and all animals...they don't belong in a tent or cage!!

as i live in south africa(africa)i have these animals like in my back yard so to speak.what the hell is going on with people wanting to do this?we had a program about elephant rage!when elies flip and kill there trainers,people at ciruses,etc and its about time these animals stand up for there land enough is enough elephants are from africa and they never forget anything so when these high flyers come kill a mom and take a baby for some god for saking zoo and that is were it must live in abuse and then we ask why did that elie flip and kill all those people?well i would also remb if someone killed my moyher in cold blood for some zoo or circus and then get abuse from all sides if i dont do my best to perform for these stupid tricks!think next time anybody goes to a circus and think how sweet is this elie doing all these tricks wonder ever how they get trained?not nice for every animals turns and kills a human i think yes nice its about time we get what coming to us for every animal that gets hurt,wait till they c god and then they will no pain like never before!!!hell is hot and you burn forever and will feel every little thing that will happen to u,carry on abusing animals!c how wil have the last laugh!!elies should b free and die of old age!

As with all creatures on this earth, elephants are special. The way the animals that are forced to take part in the circus are treated is one of the cruelest things I have ever heard of. Elephans are precious and rare and should be taken care of and respected.
