An upcoming TV series, "Greatest Show on Earth", promises a "behind-the-scenes" look at the legendary Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. But the real story is that Circus staff regularly abuse and torment performing elephants with bull hooks, chains and other devices.
The abuse of Ringling Bros. circus elephants -- well documented by animal welfare organizations, state humane agencies, and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspectors -- violates both the federal Endangered Species Act and the Animal Welfare Act, which prohibit the abuse of endangered animals used in entertainment.
Many have witnessed routine violent abuse and cruelty toward the elephants, including frequently hitting the elephants with bull hooks, rubbing dirt into sores of elephants to conceal their wounds, and routinely chaining the elephants on concrete or in cramped rail cars for many hours of every day and night.
This kind of cruelty is not entertainment -- contact TNT and urge them to cancel the "Greatest Show on Earth" series.

Dear Mr Koonin, I have never heard of entertamient that involves hurting someone helpless except for in movies which usually end in happy endings. I have heard that life dosen't have alot of those unlike most people luckly you can change that. God put you in the position your in for a reason its up to you ignore the truth of defend it!!! I was 8 when I saw my first circus. At 8 years old it broke my heart...I've NEVER been to another circus since....! Animals of all species are not here for humans to abuse and neglect..! New laws need to be passed for their sake and ours....The meek shall inherit the earth?--who do you think that'll be????

Abuse of animals is disgusting. Switch the elephant for your spouse or children, and would you continue to allow that? Just because elephants are in a different race and don't speak English, doesn't mean they are unworthy of the same respect. If TNT airs this show I will never watch the entire station again.

We regularly boycott this circus due to its continued abusive behavior. Please do not condone their behavior. They could easily remove their animal acts, as many circuses have done worldwide, but they refuse.

If they want a show a real behind the scenes look at the torture these animals endore, the pain and the misery not to mention their life spans are cut short in every animal by at least half. Does this honesty sound like it would be entertaining. If you can not tell the truth then do not air the show.

Dear TNT President, I would like you to try a day in an elephants place. We want honest reporting! I will not allow my children to attend a circus. They do not understand what is done to these animals to make them perform. Until animals are no longer used in circuses, I will not support the Ringling Brothers by buying tickets to their shows. The children need to know and SEE what is done in the background of these performances, so tell the children the TRUTH!!

My child has never been to a circus and never will be taken to one, in hopes that he will be part of a new generation that does not think of cruelty to animals as entertainment. There is a movement occuring among people these days that involves the acknowledgment of animal rights. It's not the same world that it once was, with people turning a blind eye to an animal's pain and abuse. More and more people are learning to speak out against such hate for all creatures. I believe circuses' days are numbered, unless it is a circus only filled with people as entertainers and not abused animals.
