An upcoming TV series, "Greatest Show on Earth", promises a "behind-the-scenes" look at the legendary Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. But the real story is that Circus staff regularly abuse and torment performing elephants with bull hooks, chains and other devices.
The abuse of Ringling Bros. circus elephants -- well documented by animal welfare organizations, state humane agencies, and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspectors -- violates both the federal Endangered Species Act and the Animal Welfare Act, which prohibit the abuse of endangered animals used in entertainment.
Many have witnessed routine violent abuse and cruelty toward the elephants, including frequently hitting the elephants with bull hooks, rubbing dirt into sores of elephants to conceal their wounds, and routinely chaining the elephants on concrete or in cramped rail cars for many hours of every day and night.
This kind of cruelty is not entertainment -- contact TNT and urge them to cancel the "Greatest Show on Earth" series.

Cruelty is always intolerable, no animal should be subjected to cruelty at the hands of humans. Ringling Bros. abuse and torment elephants all in the name of "entertainment" for people? This is just wrong and not acceptable nor justified. The circus can perform fine without the elephants - have people do stunts by their own free will. Don't force animals - this is wrong. Cruelty is never justified!

I havent been to the circus since I was little and wont, ever again. I now have a child and will never bring her. She will never know the cruelty of those places. It's disgusting.

It is morally and ethically reprehensible that TNT would create a show about Ringling Bros. The Greatest Show on Earth is one of the greatest abusers of the animals in its care, particularly the elephants. It has a PROVEN track record of neglect, beatings, chaining & also not vaccinating its elephants, which presents a public health hazard! There is a court case against them for these very reasons. Yet TNT wants to do a show about them! For shame!! Please find another subject and organization who is much more deserving. If interested in circuses, why not Cirque Du Soleil? Do not sully TNT's name & reputation with Ringling. Many companies have dropped support of them, like Denny's, Mastercard,etc, please join their ranks TNT!

Noone in this day and age should have to be told why one of the most intelligent animals on this earth should not be confined un-naturally and forced to perform for a bunch of JERKS just to satisfy their need to be entertained!! This is intolerable!!! It must stop. We need to respect what animals we have left while we have time. My specific reference is aimed at the elephants, but they all need our help!

I stopped going to the circus many years ago because of this. Each ticket that is bought ultimately supports and perpetuates animal cruelty by ensuring their financial solvency. I will NOT contrinute to this condition and I hope others won't either. Shame on them for ruining an American tradition - the circus!!

We have specifically NOT taken our son to see this circus because of its policies and treatment of animals. We go to things like Shakespeare and Cirque du Soleil instead. He wants to be a veterinarian and HELP animals. Circuses have absolutely no need to use animals at all, let alone treat them in such inhumane ways.
