Condemn the "Greatest Show on Earth"

Target: Steve Koonin, President of TNT
Sponsored by: ASPCA

An upcoming TV series, "Greatest Show on Earth", promises a "behind-the-scenes" look at the legendary Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. But the real story is that Circus staff regularly abuse and torment performing elephants with bull hooks, chains and other devices.

The abuse of Ringling Bros. circus elephants -- well documented by animal welfare organizations, state humane agencies, and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspectors -- violates both the federal Endangered Species Act and the Animal Welfare Act, which prohibit the abuse of endangered animals used in entertainment.

Many have witnessed routine violent abuse and cruelty toward the elephants, including frequently hitting the elephants with bull hooks, rubbing dirt into sores of elephants to conceal their wounds, and routinely chaining the elephants on concrete or in cramped rail cars for many hours of every day and night.

This kind of cruelty is not entertainment -- contact TNT and urge them to cancel the "Greatest Show on Earth" series.

Elephants are a truly intelligent animal capable of experiencing the same emotions--including fear and despair--as we are. No creature deserves to be abused, but especially not one so remarkable as the elephant.

These intelligent animals are undeserving of the treatment meted out by circuses such as Ringling Brothers. The "entertainment" they are forced to provide is cruel and a program celebrating it is ridiculous. Please reconsider. I'm reconsidering watching any other TNT programs or supporting any TNT advertisers.

as a kid i would enjoy seeing this cirus not knowing the abuse the animals are going through. If any show should be broadcast it should be a show to educate kids and adults about this abuse so that pple would stop paying money to keep these going.

Ringling Bros secret is out. The abuse of animals is intolerable. I would never watch a show that glorifies cruelty

This abuse of elephants is unacceptable. Would you put puppies, kittens, or horses being tortured on television? This is just as bad. Please do not support this show.

It is inhumane to transport these animals around the country for profit. they deserve better.

Elephants are intelligent beings, who for centuries have been abused in the workplace, and for our unthinking entertainment. Is it any wonder that they occasionally succumb to rage and grief, and "run amok"? Wouldn't you want to do the same if you were kept imprisoned in such conditions?

The fact that they've taken these creatures out of their home environment is bad, but abusing them is even worse. If you're not running an expose, cancel the show.
