Support REAL Sex Education Programs

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: NARAL Pro-Choice America
Recent reports say that 25 percent of all teenage girls in the U.S. have a sexually transmitted disease. This study is just the latest piece of evidence of a nationwide crisis in adolescent reproductive health - and unfortunately, the Bush administration continues to turn a blind eye to the problem. We need to get rid of the current deceptive approach of abstinence-only programs and put in place a federal sex-education program that gives teens the facts - including both the benefits of abstinence and the facts about safe sex and how to prevent the spread of STDs. The Responsible Education About Life (REAL) Act will do just that.

Dear Senator [Name],

I urge you to co-sponsor the Responsible Education About Life (REAL) Act (S.972), which would establish the first-ever federal sex-education program.

With recent statistics that 25 percent of teenage girls are infected with an STD, it is becoming increasingly clear that our sex education system is faulty. For years, Washington has flooded unproven abstinence-only programs with our taxpayer dollars, while no federal program is dedicated to honest, medically accurate sex education.

This huge financial investment in abstinence-only programs conflicts with scientific and medical research: abstinence-only programs are not proven effective and may result in riskier behavior by teenagers.

Daily pronouncements from various media sources provide information on the decline in the number of teen pregnancies and the increase in abstinence within our country. As a teacher in an inner city school, I have to say that it's a bunch of bunk! The number of teen pregnancies in the inner city continues to rise and cases of sexually transmitted diseases are at an all time high. Pull your heads out of the sand! "Just Say No!" didn't work 25 years ago against drugs and it doesn't today among sexually aware teens and preteens.

ignorance is what stands in the way of success. We need to strive towards the ability of each individual to make educated informed decisions regardless of race, sex or age.

Lord knows we need much better sex education in schools. I had sex ed when I was 11, 13 & 15 & it was a joke!! I didn't learn a thing. It seems that people are afraid to talk to children & teenagers about sex. That's one reason why we have so many pregnant teenagers & so many people with STD's, because they are not educated about sex.

Students must be able to learn the important information about sex! Teaching abstinence only has clearly not worked, and something new must replace it.

You can't just tell young people not to have sex, because they will, and some end up having made bad choices, these teens should know the proper ways to protect themselves.

Its absurd not to teach sex education in today's society where boys and girls are reaching sexual maturity at a more rapid rate than ever before. We need to take responsibility and give young people the right tools to make the right decisions.
