Recent reports say that 25 percent of all teenage girls in the U.S. have a sexually transmitted disease. This study is just the latest piece of evidence of a nationwide crisis in adolescent reproductive health - and unfortunately, the Bush administration continues to turn a blind eye to the problem. We need to get rid of the current deceptive approach of abstinence-only programs and put in place a federal sex-education program that gives teens the facts - including both the benefits of abstinence and the facts about safe sex and how to prevent the spread of STDs. The Responsible Education About Life (REAL) Act will do just that.
We took action on “Support REAL Sex Education Programs”

Whether or not you believe in pre-marital sex our children are having sex. PLEASE give them knowledge which might actually have a more powerful effect on preventing pre-marital sex. Preaching abstinence only without facts is akin to sticking one's head in the sand.

Want an STD? A nice case of Gonorrhea? It sure seems like it.
We need better sex ed in ALL of the schools. Not only the rich schools like in my school district.

It is a shame how we treat our youth in this country! We expect them to make responsible decisions when we haven't provided them with any information! We should take more responsibility in helping them before they are forced to face even more difficult decisions!

Abstinance only programs do not work. Teens need to know the real facts.
Only then will we be able to lower the incidents of unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.

This is not about morals, or imposing one's personal moral code on our youth. This is about the inate right for all Americans to be informed on their health. Aids is not only a gay issue, but a straight issue too. It hits our teens, and a lack of knowledge makes it worse. Religion is null and void when is promotes unhealthy policies.

everyone says knopwledge is power by not teaching students about safe sex practices and teaching them abstience is the key we are slowly killing our children. if it is not taught to use a condom them it will not be used. too many people are getting std that it is unreal.knowledge is power.

San Antonio has a HUGE number of pregnant, unmarried teens. Which has led to a lot of unwanted babies and then on to the death of many babies and toddlers here. I for one think that REAL sex education is necesary.
When I was young mothers and daughters met at school for a program on menestration, these days nothing is told to young girls about their changing bodies.
I also was young and pregnant before legal abortions in 1966. The eventual outcome of that pregnancy was an illegal termination. Fortunately it was by a real doctor. So let's be realistic. Young people have had and always will have sex. Let's tell them why they need to wait and if they don't what they need to do to survive.

Get your heads out of the sand, stop wasting my tax dollars on useless abstinece only dogma that pushes young women into dangerous sex. I remember when I was a teenager thank goodness for Planned Parenthood we don't need children having children. Great logic be anti sex education but ready to imprison the Browns ans the Blacks and ramp up the death penalty. We want you to have babies but want to cut out any aid, ruin the schools and then snap them into the judical system or wage slavery.

Another problem with most school's current abstinence-only sex-education programs is their ignorance or intolerance with regard to non-heterosexual students. If everybody is supposed to "wait until marriage," what happens to the people who cannot legally marry in most areas? Everyone needs medically accurate information in order to prevent them spreading sexually transmitted diseases or having unwanted pregnancies. We need good medical information for the girls and boys who really want to have sex with each other, or will have sex with each other due to immaturity or what-have-you. We also need good medical information for the boys who will have sex with other boys and the girls who will have sex with other girls. The last thing the government should want is more HIV/AIDS victims (who often become unable to work and are thus a drain on public resources.)

What could be more loving and responsible than putting some thought into how we express our intent in life? We as humans have control over the choices we make. The more informed we are about the process, the more prepared we are to make better choices. Let's not forsake the opportunity to raise our level of consciousness and action. Both STD's and unwanted pregnancy are preventable measures with the help of education. Abstinence-only education is one choice, but not the only choice. It is arcane to pass judgement on a physical process that is completely natural and to continue to shroud it in mystery, shame, guilt, fear and darkness. Humans have a right to understand how their bodies function and to claim the responsibility for making educated choices about how they may healthfully utilize their bodies sexually.

Because ignorance is NOT bliss. I work at a high school and we have 17 girls that are currently pregnant and most are 15 years old of Hispanic decent. These girls tell me they had no idea they could get pregnant so easily. They say they aren't to talk about sex and birth control at home cause they are Catholic. Since when is fornicating acceptable yet birth control is not. Our children are having children...they need to be taught human relations in school since most are not allowed to discuss it at home.
