Recent reports say that 25 percent of all teenage girls in the U.S. have a sexually transmitted disease. This study is just the latest piece of evidence of a nationwide crisis in adolescent reproductive health - and unfortunately, the Bush administration continues to turn a blind eye to the problem. We need to get rid of the current deceptive approach of abstinence-only programs and put in place a federal sex-education program that gives teens the facts - including both the benefits of abstinence and the facts about safe sex and how to prevent the spread of STDs. The Responsible Education About Life (REAL) Act will do just that.

Actual research has shown that those countries that promote total sex education have LOWER incidence of teen sex and LOWER rates of unwanted pregnancies; just the opposite of the abstinance only proponents opinions.

Abstinence-only education doesn't work. How many times must we kick that dead horse? Since young people are interested in sex, they need the facts and they need prevention -- in the form of condoms. Parents who would rather teach this at home are entitled to sign a waiver that their child should skip the lesson, but it should be made available to all American children of a certain age. Their lives will depend upon it.

Education brings knowledge, and knowledge is power. If a girl/woman has the proper and correct information, she can make an educated choice and prevent herself from getting an STD or having an unwanted pregnancy. Abstinence-only programs dont provide this vital information and only leads to more girls and women getting diseases and abortions.

Abstinence is great.....when that is what someone chooses. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. Abstinence only programs do a great job of influencing teens to not have sex, but that is all they do.....influence. They do not 100% prevent teens from having sex. Teens absolutely need sex education classes to teach them how to have safe sex if that is what they choose to do. If every teen had a good blend of abstinence and sex education, I believe there would be a much lower rate of unplanned pregnancies and STD's.

Proper education helps children know more about sexual education so in the long run they know what is going on not only sexually buit as wellas with their health.

Abstinence only has not only been a failure, it has been the root cause of our children becoming the carriers of STD's. This, to me is the most heinous cause of child abuse I have seen in the name of God and the Bush administration! Educate our kids NOW, at home and also in our public and private schools. Stop wasting tax dollars on so many failed programs.

As the oldest child I have had to see what the effects of sex do on my younger siblings. Even with an open minded home, where we were taught about safe-sex once puberty started, and the emotional ties to sex, my siblings still started as young as 13. This proves to me, even though I waited, not every teen will. We need to be proactive and not reactive to teenage deaths by HIV or high-risk pregnancies. It is time to take action, and not try to ignore the problems.

We are raising a generation of sterile young women because of their exposure to multiple sex partners and std's. It's time to take our heads out of the sand and begin addressing the real issues of teen age promiscuity and reckless sexual behavior by giving them the cold hard facts behind the glitz and excitement they see in movies and on tv.

Abstinence-only doesn't work.Kids are
being lied to about the effectiveness of
birth control and that condoms are useless. This is a vicious thing to do
because the boys won't wear them when they do have sex.And they will
have sex. Abstinence-only is evil !

Makes sense. If kids know what could happen, they will be less inclined to do it.

many are engaging in anal sex thinking that its ok because its not "sex" only to be further misinformed because they don't teach facts about sex. while abstinence is good many children do not have a clue about the risks about sex and unfortunately many parents were misinformed also leading to a total epidemic of diseases (aids, herpes etc)

Comprehensive sexuality education, (and that includes abstinence education) has been proven effective to influence teens to behave in positive, responsible and less risky ways. It's only common sense to anyone who understands adolescent behavior.
