We Want Truth in Fur Labeling!

Target: House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Care2
The Fur Products Labeling Act requires that any garment made of fur list the type of animals used and the country in which the animals were killed. However, a loophole in the law exempts garments made with up to $150 worth of fur from being labeled.

This is bad news for consumers because without proper labeling, they don't know whether a product contains real fur or faux fur – particularly when today's processing techniques can make it nearly impossible for a person to tell the difference.

And it’s not just scraps—animals are killed specifically for fur trim, which is commonly exempt under the loophole. What’s more, with rabbit pelts valued at as little as $5, an unlabeled garment can easily contain fur from multiple animals.

U.S. Representatives Mike Ferguson (R-NJ) and Jim Moran (D-VA) have introduced H.R. 4904, The Truth in Fur Labeling Act of 2006, which would close this loophole. This bill would also be an added layer of protection against any illegal dog and cat fur coming into the country as trim on unlabeled garments.

Help give consumers the right to make informed choices about whether or not to wear fur. Join the Humane Society of the United States in urging your representatives to co-sponsor the Truth in Fur Labeling Act!

Dear Representative,

I strongly urge you to co-sponsor H.R. 4904, the Truth in Fur Labeling Act. Your support will help ensure that consumers can make informed decisions about the products they choose to purchase. Dyed fur, shaved fur, and other manipulations of animal fur make it very difficult to determine what is being sold in stores.

Consumers should have a right to know whether they are purchasing animal fur and if so, which country produced the fur used. I am concerned that dog and cat fur could be entering the country illegally as unlabelled fur trim.

Just as we have nutrition labels listing the ingredients in our food in order to be more conscious about what we're putting in our bodies, it is now necessary to list the "ingredients" in our clothing so we are able to be more conscious of what we're putting ON our bodies.

Some people are compassionate and don't want to wear anything that animals were killed for.

All products that coantin animal fur should be labeled properly no matter the cost so that those of us that don't agree with using animals' furs will know not to buy them.

I am so sick of loopholes-People don't have time to research every moment and aspect of their lives because we are all so busy working our cans off earning sub-standard wages and trying to scramble to afford the benifits our jobs used to supply like health care. I hear senators and congressmen on t.v. say they sign stuff the don't even read and during this presidency, it seems as though you all have been on vacation every two weeks. You get paid lovely salaries to do work that the regular citizen doesn't have time to do. It is IMPORTANT work-I wish you all would use the brains the good lord gave you, have some integrity, and earn the salaries you receive. In this particular case, the truth in fur labeling act has a loophole so a garment doesn't have to lable there is real fur on a garment unless there is 150.00 worth of fur on it. O.K.-really? just make the clothing industry be honest-there are plenty of people who don't care what they are wearing. Nobody is going to the poor house because a few people like me want to have a choice not to wear something that has had a torturous life and an unthinkably brutal death.

Did you know that China is using cats and dogs bred in tortured and in horrible conditions to make "fur" toys? I just saw these fur animals in a local store. Ugh!

Besides fur being completely uneccesary and useless in the 21st Century, it is itself inhumane and all consumers deserve the right to know what it is they're purchasing.

It is sick and cruel to kill animals for fashion. It should be banned and illegal to utilize fur for anything.

I feel it is wrong and misleading to not truthfully label products that contain fur and or any other type of animal hyde. Many people including myself try very hard to not wear clothing that animals were senselessly killed to produced, so when I go to purchase clothing and I purchase something and believe that it does not have any contents of animal fur or hyde I want to ensure that is truth and not an omission.

Animal fur belongs on ANIMALS. Killing them to wear their covering is cruel, inhumane, and wrong. You don't see them sporting human skin coats do you?
