We Want Truth in Fur Labeling!

Target: House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Care2
The Fur Products Labeling Act requires that any garment made of fur list the type of animals used and the country in which the animals were killed. However, a loophole in the law exempts garments made with up to $150 worth of fur from being labeled.

This is bad news for consumers because without proper labeling, they don't know whether a product contains real fur or faux fur – particularly when today's processing techniques can make it nearly impossible for a person to tell the difference.

And it’s not just scraps—animals are killed specifically for fur trim, which is commonly exempt under the loophole. What’s more, with rabbit pelts valued at as little as $5, an unlabeled garment can easily contain fur from multiple animals.

U.S. Representatives Mike Ferguson (R-NJ) and Jim Moran (D-VA) have introduced H.R. 4904, The Truth in Fur Labeling Act of 2006, which would close this loophole. This bill would also be an added layer of protection against any illegal dog and cat fur coming into the country as trim on unlabeled garments.

Help give consumers the right to make informed choices about whether or not to wear fur. Join the Humane Society of the United States in urging your representatives to co-sponsor the Truth in Fur Labeling Act!

Dear Representative,

I strongly urge you to co-sponsor H.R. 4904, the Truth in Fur Labeling Act. Your support will help ensure that consumers can make informed decisions about the products they choose to purchase. Dyed fur, shaved fur, and other manipulations of animal fur make it very difficult to determine what is being sold in stores.

Consumers should have a right to know whether they are purchasing animal fur and if so, which country produced the fur used. I am concerned that dog and cat fur could be entering the country illegally as unlabelled fur trim.
We signed the “We Want Truth in Fur Labeling!” petition!

first i believe that wearing fur is disgusting, what's fashionable about wearing a dead animal on you is beyond me, i guess i am not heartless enough, secondly why is it that we must create laws to protect and end up having these loopholes so people can get away with it, most of the fur comes from china where they treat the cats and dogs like crap, they believe that the more the animals suffer before death the better the meat tastes, which leads them to skin them alive, i recomend you look at "peta's" website and tell me that after watching the video's of this cruel trade you can hand on heart agree with it. People who choose to wear fur as wrong as it may be deserve to know where it came from!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Be bloody honest with the people that put you where you are!!!!!!!!!

Not only are those animals living in terrible conditions, we have the technology to make alternatives to resemble fur doing away with the atrocious committed by people towards animals just for their fur.

It's bad enough that "fur" animals live miserable lives contained in horrible cages, and that they die miserable deaths just so that some human can wear the poor animal's fur. The least you can do is be honest about the labeling, because there exist many DECENT people who don't want the blood of the dead animal on their consciences.

there are many people that feel as strongly as me about animal rights and do not want to buy any product containing animal products. people shuld be able to make the choice and without proper labelling we can't do that!

why should people wear fur if we don't want to ? it's called human rights and we're intitiled to it. animals should have their fur on their bodies and not on ours. you shouldn't trick us into buying products we don't want to buy. it's stupid and if i don't want to wear it then i won't. plain and simple. i will never wear fur in my lifetime and i won't start now by your false labeling. we should know what it is we're wearing and what's in it. so START labeling and STOP not telling us what's not being labeled.
