Protect millions of wildlife before Sept. 27 – we need you!

Target: U.S. Dept of the Interior
Sponsored by: The Wilderness Society
As soon as September 27, a very special wild place could be sold to the oil and gas industry – unless we act now!

One of the most important wetland complexes in the Arctic, the Teshekpuk Lake region is essential habitat for millions of birds and tens of thousands of caribou. It is also a stunning sweep of landscape, remarkable even in Alaska where a grand scale is the only scale.

Together, we can get the Interior Department to do the only sensible thing: cancel the September 27 sale of this precious public land.

The sale is imminent! Act quickly before it's too late! Sign this petition to stop the sale of the Teshekpuk Lake region.
deadline: 8-29-2007

Dear Secretary Kempthorne,

I am very much opposed to the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) oil and gas activity plan for the Northeast Planning Area of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A). The plan, approved in January 2006, will open 100 percent of the area north and east of Teshekpuk Lake to leasing.

That would not only place the caribou and waterfowl populations there in serious jeopardy but would damage the important subsistence activities of a number of Native villages. The North Slope's residents have expressed strong opposition to the plan. So have sportsmen's groups, scientists, conservationists and the public at large.

The area around Teshekpuk Lake should remain what it is today: an irreplaceable, unbroken, core wildlife habitat for caribou, molting geese and millions of other birds and mammals and a place where generations of Alaska Natives have hunted, fished and pursued their subsistence ways of life.

[your comment here]

I ask you to cancel the lease sale now tentatively planned for September 2006 in the Teshekpuk Lake Surface Protection Area. I also ask you to direct the BLM to protect the full range of the area's values, from subsistence to recreation to the health of fish and wildlife populations. It would also ensure strict adherence to environmental standards during every phase of oil and gas operations.

Such a decision would be a fitting way to begin your tenure as Interior Secretary, signaling not only a new face but a new day, one of careful environmental stewardship. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Future generations will curse us if we continue to plunder places like this one for profit

It appears this administration is set upon destroying all our wild preserves for big bucks. Listen to Americans, we want these areas protected for the wildlife and for future generations to enjoy. One day this earth is going to be void of wildlife because you have sold "our" lands. Please keep this area wild!

Please preserve this area as its considered the last frontier and its beauty is unrivaled. The plants, trees, and most importantly the animals have a right to be there and call it home. The powers that be cannot keep eating up acre after acre of land and not expect there to be consequences, inbalances, and most of all once its destroyed it can never be reclaimed. Please leave this area alone!

It's never right to put profit before conservation. It's way past time that we (ALL developed countries)looked into alternative means of energy.Stop pandering to big business and start caring for the environment and the earth.

it is absolutely not acceptable how less this government cares about the environment! it is chocking to see in what way money has become the only motivation. just think about the war in afghanistan.... bush knew about the attacks of the 9.11 and did nothing- to afterwards have an official "reason"to begin a war(which he wanted because he's interested in their oil!!!) so now the big boss and businessman wants this wonderful place in the arctic to be his newest money source. the government does not seem to care about all the plants and animals that would get endangered it that case! (such as the governemnt didn't care about the koyto contract.....)shame! PLEASE GET REASONABLE AND LET THIS PLACE UNHARMED! NATURE WILL THANK YOU (or do you want to have more and more cathastrophes like hurricanes? if you continue like that, you can be sure will)

Alaska is our last chance for saving vast areas of wilderness for our seventh generation. Please honor them by leaving Alaska's wild places alone. No amount of new oil or gas that exists beneath Alaska will solve our nation's energy crisis. Only a new, sane energy policy will do that. As Secretary of the Interior, you should consider one of your priorities to get the Energy Secretary on the right track for the future. Your job is to save the Interior, not the oil companies.

Let's care for our natural environment. There is no need to destroy nature for financial profit. The world is wealthy enough to provide for all of humanity's basic needs. All we need to do is distribute it more evenly. If you observe yourself carefully, you will see that excess money does not actually bring you more than a brief transitory pleasure (which is usually only partial, too). If we want genuine, lasting happiness, then we are best to focus on other things: like developing our relationships with others, spending quiet time in relaxing, contemplation and meditation, and perhaps devoting ourselves to selfless causes, like environmental conservation and ending poverty. Also, if we want to focus on pleasure, we can get our fill of pleasure from simple things, like good times with friends, making love, spending time amongst plants and animals, exercise, and the things I mentioned above, like devoting ourselves to selfless causes :)
