Ban Deadly Pesticides that Kill Wildlife

Target: U.S. House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Care2
Compound 1080 and sodium cyanide are deadly poisons that are currently used to kill predators. These poisons are indiscriminate, cause extreme suffering before death, and threaten endangered species, pets, children, and anyone who happens to come in contact with them.

Compound 1080 is one of the most deadly poisons in the world. It is highly toxic in small doses and is deadly to humans, wildlife and pets, and there is no known antidote. The EPA banned compound 1080 in 1972, but intense lobbying by the livestock industry led to its re-approval for use in predator control programs in 1985.

It's time for our government to approach wildlife management in a humane and intelligent way. There is no need to use deadly poisons to "control" predators. Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) has introduced legislation to ban these toxic chemicals - please urge your representative in Congress to support H.B. 4775, the Compound 1080 and M-44 Elimination Act, today!

Dear Representative,

I am writing to urge you to support H.B. 4775, the Compound 1080 and M-44 Elimination Act, which would ban the use of Compound 1080 and sodium cyanide.

Compound 1080 and sodium cyanide are both deadly chemicals used in predator control devices. These chemicals are indiscriminate and kill many non-target species every year, including federally protected species and pets. These chemicals are also lethal in humans and their use in predator control devices has sickened dozens of people.

There are effective non-lethal means of managing wildlife-livestock interactions. By banning the use of deadly chemicals and certain predator control devices that use them, we can focus on more humane solutions to protecting livestock from predators, and protect children, wildlife and pets from exposure to these deadly toxins.

Please support H.B. 4775 today. Thank you for considering my comments.

Sincerely,
[Your name here]

I am familiar with 1080 as it is used in parts of Australia with deadly consequences, everything it comes in contact with dies, it does not discriminate between pest and protected species..It should be banned.

The effects of these deadly poisons are long term and kill non-target animals, as well as endangered animals. I URGE you to support HB 4775, and put an end to the use of these dangerous toxins.

When man encroaches on wildlife territory, he should expect a certain amount of interaction or predation. This does not mean he should indiscriminantly kill either the wildlife or any other animal that comes into unfortunate contact with him. These poisons are especially egregious in their cruelty and indiscriminant manner of target selection. It is time we moved on to more reasonable management and interaction with our fellow inhabitants of earth.

I live in another country that purchased pesticides made in your country. When I was 17 I moved to a regional/rural city to embrace a healthy lifestyle. I grew my own organic vegies and built an adobe house. Toxic aerial sprays (on nearby pine forests) inadvertently crushed my healthy lifestyle. I was not the only person to suffer long ongoing health problems (that was 20 years ago or more, and my condition worsens over time) and I know of one person who died as a result. IT WAS NOT UNTIL 100-YEAR-OLD BROAD LEAF TREES STARTED DYING THAT ANY NOTICE WAS TAKEN. It was also discovered that the compounds had found their way into water catchment areas. Then with litigation fears all has been kept very quiet. They need not have worried because sick people do not have the energy or the money to sue. JUST STOP EXPERIMENTING WITH DANGEROUS COMPOUNDS! It is very difficult to count the cost in hindsight and more difficult to undo the damage. I am still living, though I am not able to have a productive life. This too is a hidden loss to society.
