Don't Risk Another Nuclear Showdown: Support Direct Negotiations with Iran Now

Target: George W. Bush, President
Sponsored by: Ploughshares Fund
Now is the time to find peaceful solutions to the the standoff over Iran's nuclear program. Opening lines of communication with Iran is the only way to facilitate a non-nuclear resolution - avoiding another nuclear crisis.

The "no negotiation" approach to Iran has not been successful. For nearly 26 years now, the U.S. has had no formal diplomatic dialogue with Iran, even though key governmental bodies in Iran are eager to talk.

Credible sources say preparations are underway for military action against Iran. "Everything is on the table," says the administration - everything, that is, except direct talks.

The war in Iraq taught us about the disastrous costs of reckless and unsustainable military action. We now must bear the consequences of refusing to talk directly to North Korea. But we still have time to change our course with Iran. By openly communicating with those in Iran who want to negotiate, we can avoid another Iraq.

Tell President Bush to take a diplomatic approach with Iranian leaders. Direct negotiations are needed now more than ever!

Dear President Bush,

I am deeply concerned about the path this country is taking with Iran. The U.S. has not had formal diplomatic dialogue with Iran for nearly 26 years, and this "no negotiation" stance is not working. Please engage in direct diplomatic negotiations with the governmental bodies in Iran that have demonstrated an eagerness for dialogue.

Military action cannot be an option. Such a move would kill large numbers of innocent people, dramatically increase the instability in this already war-torn region, and foster even more hatred and international condemnation of the United States.

I ask you to open up direct diplomatic channels with Tehran instead of creating another disastrous conflict. Please take all steps necessary to reach a peaceful resolution to the current situation, including immediate direct negotiations without pre-conditions.

Experts agree that even if Iran decided to build a nuclear weapon, it would take several years for them to do so. There is no crisis yet, and our government should not create one with inflammatory rhetoric or military threats.

This world cannot afford another war or to lose so many more innocent people. Please use your diplomatic tools to stop terrorism, nuclear weapons and inhumane conditions to make the world a better place, not another war torn country with countless casualties and bring our troops home to defend our land from within!

Both the Romans and Hitler learned that spreading one's troops too thinly is not an effective battle strategy. Why should we continue to repeat lessons history has already taught us?

We're already fighting a losing battle... why provoke another? Our resources will be stretched too thin and we'll lose more soldiers. We won't have anything left to fight with. Get it together. When you have a problem with someone, you talk to them about it, you don't be a chicken and plot behind their back. Man up!

Wars solve nothing. If we used our energy, money and time on helping to understand the issues I believe we could solve them without bloodshed. Maybe it's time the women of the world took over this issue!

The last thing the world needs is nuclear war. Put out differences aside, and invest money in what really matters, like slowing global warming, protecting wildlife and the environment, eleviating poverty, and ensuring that all people across the globe have a chance at a safe, and prosperous life.

We need to move forward with non-violent solutions; the world depends on it. I lived through the fear of nuclear war as a child. I do not wish this for the children of today.

Another bloody battle is NOT the way to show the world that the U.S. is a leader among nations. Diplomacy, tact and peace, uniting humanity as a whole, not separating, dividing and accentuating the differences. Start working on a solid foundation of the similarities versus the differences amongst all people and eliminate the need for such devastating weapons and use the technology wisely for something other than death and destruction... Tomorrow is World Peace Day... Let's start making friends instead of more enemies!
