Support Women's Right to Equal Pay

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: National Women's Law Center

Too many women in this country are getting paid less than they should be. If our leaders really want to stimulate the economy, they should boost women's paychecks by making sure they can earn an equal wage for equal work.

Unfortunately, a recent Supreme Court decision in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber severely limits workers' ability to protect their rights. The decision makes it virtually impossible for workers to sue for pay discrimination and rewards employers for hiding inequities.

But a bill awaiting a vote in the Senate would help women fight for fair pay. The Fair Pay Restoration Act would correct the unjust Supreme Court ruling and give all employees a better shot at a fair workplace.

Now, with the Fair Pay Restoration Act advancing through the Senate, Congress can correct the Supreme Court's wrong -- and make sure women are earning more than just peanuts. Urge your Senators to support the Fair Pay Restoration Act today!

Subject Line: Support the Fair Pay Restoration Act

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing to urge you to vote for the Fair Pay Restoration Act (S. 1843), which will reverse the effects of the recent Supreme Court decision in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber. The Ledbetter decision severely limits workers' ability to vindicate their rights and distorts Congress' intent to eliminate sex and other forms of discrimination in the workplace. A parallel bill has already been passed in the House.

In Ledbetter, the Supreme Court held that employees cannot challenge ongoing compensation discrimination if the employer's original discriminatory decision occurred more than 180 days before, even when the employee continues to receive paychecks that have been discriminatorily reduced. Prior to this decision, the law as interpreted by the EEOC and nine of the ten courts of appeals that have considered the issue treated each discriminatory paycheck as a separate discriminatory act that started a new 180-day clock.

Women should have equal rights as men. And that includes the good and the bad. You'll notice that when talking about Women's rights, you only hear about equal treatment in the job industry but you never hear about equal treatment when it comes to athletic ability. For example, the P.E. standards are different for boys and girls. If girls are getting equal treatment then it should be all around. Take the average of the two athletic standards to make one equal standard. Because, honestly, it isn't fair for women to get all the perks and none of the work. But it also isn't fair for women to be considered at a "lower level" than men.

I think this should be something that all of America can get behind. Women who are performing the same jobs should be paid the same - everyone who said the ERA wasn't necessary should be paying attention. Women are more than ever making important and unique contributions to society, and to pay them less is to underhandedly support the notion that women belong in the home, not the work place. What about single mothers? Women working while their male partners are fighting overseas? What about young women trying to get through their first years out of school, already balancing student loan debt, the increase rise in housing costs, and the terrible economy? And if there is no transparency in the workplace related to salary differences, then the time frame limit the Supreme Court has established is a farce.

It is dishonorable when someone does not get equal pay for equal work. This will restore honor to our economy. Our women have not been honored for the work that they do. There are many single mothers who could use the money to support their families.

It usually takes more than 180 days from date of hire to find out about comparative pay packages. It is a matter of fairness. Discriminatory salaries for women or minorities doing the same job with equal experience are wrong and women & minority ought to have the right to hold businesses to account. Limiting the ability to sue sends the message to businesses that discrimination is acceptable, and they will try ever harder to hide the evidence of their discrimination until the brief statute of limitations has passed. Lower wages for equal work contributes to chronic poverty that affects women's lives and opportunities throughout her life, and also affects the opportunities and quality of life of her children.

It will Help Greatly. Women need to start getting treated like everyone else, and getting paid like the men do. Its sad to see the world where men gets treated better than women. Men and Women should get the same rights/same pay/same everything. The Fair Pay Restoration can help so that The Nation can start being of both sexes and not just the Men.

We pay the same for our schooling; we usually work twice as hard raising families while working, and we put in the same, long hours. Give us the same respect for our achievements, please!
