Get Your Members of Congress on the Punch Clock

Target: U.S. Senate; House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Sunlight Network
This year, Congress is on track to spend the least amount of time in session of any Congress since 1948. So far, the House of Representatives has scheduled a mere 88 days in session.

What are Members of Congress doing, if not their jobs? Here's a not-so-outlandish guess: When not doing the people's business, Congressmen and Senators are spending many of their hours meeting with lobbyists and raising money.

Unfortunately, we don't know, because lawmakers aren't required to clock in or post timesheets. And yet they work for us, to the tune of $162,500 a year, plus generous pensions and health plans. Most of the rest of us punch a clock, and we think they should, too.

Enter the Punch Clock Campaign of the Sunlight Network.

We are asking Congress and FEC-qualified candidates to commit to putting their daily schedule on the internet, within 24 hours after the end of each day. That way we'll be able to check in with them, and they'll strengthen their relationship with us.

Dear Congressmember,

I believe citizens have a right to know what their Member of Congress does every day. I hereby ask my Members of Congress to publish daily their official work schedules on the Internet, within 24 hours of the end of every work day.

The morning before the Senate's August 2006 vacation, Senator Kerry, one of mine, voted with 95 other Senators to confirm a federal district court judge. Admirable, I am sure. But Senator Kerry skipped town before the evening vote on the so-called "Protect America" Act -- which the ACLU calls the "Police America" Act. This allows the Attorney General, with NO oversight by a court, the authority to issue year-long warrants for surveillance of people reasonably believed to be outside of the United States. Do you think that this might include Americans serving in Afghanistan or Iraq? Do you think that this violates the 4th Amendment? And the FISA? Senator Kerry's staffer told me in a phone call that he didn't stay for the vote because his "vote wouldn't count." Well, we taxpayers paid him for that skipped vote. It's time for our lawmakers to be accountable for their paychecks.

If I have to punch in to get paid, so should you, I want to see what my tax dollars are paying for so I know if I want to vote/hire you again next term.

Germany has already implemented this "time clock punching for officials". It has proven to be of benefit as the taxpayers money is finially being "worked" for! DO IT AND DO IT NOW!

It's about time someone wanted to see where our money is going. Congress is supposed to work for us, the American Citizens, yet all I see them doing is lining their own pocktes at the expense of the American taxpayer.

Your NOT above everyone else! You have been elected to a very important job by those who trust you. This is exactly why I'm an independent and believe the two party system no longer works. Way too much fundraising and not enough time spent on important issues of and for the people. Get with it and stop the lies, put your money where your mouth is and do the job you were elected to do.

Openess helps to counteract the general assumption that many people have that government officials are secretive and unaccountable on all levels. Any transparency compels a greater public trust.
