Get Your Members of Congress on the Punch Clock

Target: U.S. Senate; House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Sunlight Network
This year, Congress is on track to spend the least amount of time in session of any Congress since 1948. So far, the House of Representatives has scheduled a mere 88 days in session.

What are Members of Congress doing, if not their jobs? Here's a not-so-outlandish guess: When not doing the people's business, Congressmen and Senators are spending many of their hours meeting with lobbyists and raising money.

Unfortunately, we don't know, because lawmakers aren't required to clock in or post timesheets. And yet they work for us, to the tune of $162,500 a year, plus generous pensions and health plans. Most of the rest of us punch a clock, and we think they should, too.

Enter the Punch Clock Campaign of the Sunlight Network.

We are asking Congress and FEC-qualified candidates to commit to putting their daily schedule on the internet, within 24 hours after the end of each day. That way we'll be able to check in with them, and they'll strengthen their relationship with us.

Ready to get your elected representatives on the clock? Take the first step and sign the petition!

Dear Congressmember,

I believe citizens have a right to know what their Member of Congress does every day. I hereby ask my Members of Congress to publish daily their official work schedules on the Internet, within 24 hours of the end of every work day.

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE HOW MUCH TIME THEY SPEND AT KEEPING THEIR UN-FUFILLED PROMISES. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT AN EXHAUSTING DAY IT WOULD BE. FOR THOSE THAT WORK EXTRA HARD AT KEEPING THEM BECAUSE OF THOSE WHO DON'T, I APOLOGIZE. OBVIOUSLY THIS WOULD NOT APPLY TO YOU. STICK IN THERE, WE ARE TRYING TO HELP YOU.

Our representatives on "Capital" Hill should be subject to the same rules and regulations as the citizens they represent. It’s time this elitist group of people were made to live in the real world. The laws they pass should certainly apply to them in each and every way.

Corporate-friendly fascist-republicans will never do this because they are too greedy and corrupt. I would also like to see the minimum wage tied directly to congressional salaries, so that every time they give themselves a raise the minimum wage goes up by the exact same proportion. Jesus said it best: "For I was hungry and you gave me no food; I was thirsty and you gave me no drink; I was a stranger, and you did not take me in, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me. Then they also will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?' Then will he answer them, saying, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me." (Matthew 25:42-45) Contained within every evil(greedy profiteering republican) act are the seeds of its own destruction. Adhere to the teachings of Jesus, as contained in The Urantia Book, or else suffer the consequences. It IS that simple. TRUTH has been spoken to power, Peace will prevail. Buck Fush! SUPPORT GLOBAL PEACE AND ECONOMIC STABILITY, AS WELL AS ECOLOGICAL SUSTAINABILITY... IMPEACH BUSH AND CHENEY NOW!

I'd also like to see the pension plan abolished and see Congress placed on social security retirements rather than their full salary for the rest of their lives.

Because it's our tax dollars that is paying their big salaries, and we have a right to know. They should punch in and out like everyone else. And also have taxes from their pays, and should pay higher insurance costs and health care and more for prescriptions , full price. I would love to see what they do every day and how many hours they work and what they do for us. It's about time we know how they spend the tax payers money.

It's not fair that people that aren't part of the Government don't have to punch a time clock, and the ones working for the people get away with not letting the people know what their taxes are spent on. I wonder if the Government has to pay taxes also.

Somebody should hold our government accoutable for their paychecks! I know I need to account for how I earn mine. It's sad how many of our congress members have forgotten that they are there to serve the people (oh wait, they remember around election time... I forgot).
