Get Your Members of Congress on the Punch Clock

Target: U.S. Senate; House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Sunlight Network
This year, Congress is on track to spend the least amount of time in session of any Congress since 1948. So far, the House of Representatives has scheduled a mere 88 days in session.

What are Members of Congress doing, if not their jobs? Here's a not-so-outlandish guess: When not doing the people's business, Congressmen and Senators are spending many of their hours meeting with lobbyists and raising money.

Unfortunately, we don't know, because lawmakers aren't required to clock in or post timesheets. And yet they work for us, to the tune of $162,500 a year, plus generous pensions and health plans. Most of the rest of us punch a clock, and we think they should, too.

Enter the Punch Clock Campaign of the Sunlight Network.

We are asking Congress and FEC-qualified candidates to commit to putting their daily schedule on the internet, within 24 hours after the end of each day. That way we'll be able to check in with them, and they'll strengthen their relationship with us.

Ready to get your elected representatives on the clock? Take the first step and sign the petition!

Dear Congressmember,

I believe citizens have a right to know what their Member of Congress does every day. I hereby ask my Members of Congress to publish daily their official work schedules on the Internet, within 24 hours of the end of every work day.

Gimme a break! Throw the bums out of office! It's big money that votes them in....It's your ballot that votes them out! This is truly obscene.

I think you should be held accountable for every minute that you aren't working for me and the rest of the American people who voted you in. I personally didn't vote for you...but I guess I have to settle for what I have concerning members of Congress. You get paid way too much for the small amount of work you do. I served my country for 20 years and what I get each month can't even compare to the massive salary that you get...and for what?? Blowing smoke up our butts and telling us things that you think we what to hear. What we want to hear is that our troops are coming home for good....that our jobs are staying here in our country...that health care will be available for everyone. Get off your asses and start doing your damn job!!!

It is time for "CON"gress to return to representing the people - not the lobbyist or multi-national corporations!

Every year congress gives themselves a nice pay increase regardless of what kind of job they have done. As a taxpayer I feel I have a right to know just exactly how much time they are puting in and exactly what they are doing each day to warrant their anual increase in pay. Too much in Washington is kept secret from the public.

This government has been doing it's own thing for the last six years, regardless of what the people really want. It is time for everyone in Washington to be held accountable for all of their actions good and bad.

Just as we, in the private sector, must work a 40 hour week, 52 weeks per year, so should our elected representatives in Congress. This business of Congress continually voting for pay raises while they work fewer and fewer weeks per session is ludacris! If you want the job you should be willing to work for us. The taxpayers are your boss, afterall.

I have tried to make appointments with my representatives on several occasion and been told they were too busy. Now I wonder if this is true. I would love to see where time is spent when not in session. Do you really make time to talk to constituents on subjects that you do not share the same feelings about? I hope so.
