Oppose the Weakening of Organic Labeling Laws

Target: U.S. Senate & House Appropriations, Agriculture Subcommittees
Sponsored by: Consumers Union
A recent court decision ruled that only natural ingredients should be allowed in foods labeled as "organic." This ruling reinforces our current organic labeling law by keeping chemically-derived synthetic substances from being used in foods labeled as “organic.”

But industry groups are lobbying Congress to change the law so that artificial ingredients can be included in foods labeled “organic”! Specifically, food producers such as the Organic Trade Association, Kraft Foods and others seek to amend the Organic Foods Production Act (passed in 1990) so that synthetic substances can be used in food products labeled as "organic." They claim that consumers do not care about their use in "organic" food and are trying to slip this change into the law without any public input.

U.S. consumers clearly do care! The nonpartisan watchdog group Consumers Union recently conducted a nationwide survey of 1,200 adults and found that 85% of respondents said they do not expect food labeled as "organic" to contain artificial ingredients.

Send a letter telling Congress that you don’t want to buy “organic” food made with artificial ingredients!

UPDATE: On October 26th, the Agricultural Appropriations Conference Committee voted to weaken the organic label. The decision to allow chemically derived ingredients — some without careful, independent review — was made even after members of Congress heard from more than 325,000 of their constituents and more than 200 organic companies opposing this very action.

In response, Consumers Union plans to mount a widespread public education campaign to help consumers look for additional, meaningful labels on organic food products, such as ‘no-synthetics used’ or ‘100% grass fed’, so that American consumers can make informed decisions about the products they purchase.

Dear [senate/house appropriations conferees],

I am writing to urge you to support the organic labeling compromise language adopted in the Senate Appropriations bill, which passed the Senate last week and is now in conference. This amendment calls for a study on the impact of a court decision that ruled that food with the “organic” label may not be made with synthetic ingredients. Please support this language and oppose any attempt to weaken it.

I do not believe that food labeled "organic" should contain artificial or synthetic ingredients. I pay more for these organic food products because organic is the most authentic type of natural-based food that is on the market. Allowing synthetic (non-natural) ingredients runs counter to the fundamental principles of organic production, and violates the spirit and intent of the law.

This differentiation among the three types of organic food labels is meaningful and allows consumers, producers and retailers to have value choices within organic. The law already allows for synthetics to be used in products labeled as "made with organic." Changes to the law that would broaden the use of synthetics to food labeled "organic" would erode the meaning of the "organic" label and consumer confidence. The USDA should promulgate regulations that bring the National Organic Program in line with the law.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

"Organic food" already has a definition and it does NOT include "fake" ingredients. Whatever happened to "truth in advertising?" Why can't people actually get what it is they are paying a premium price for? Consumers NOT companies, for a change, huh?

Organic food needs to be organic, people rely on this for health reasons, not for financial gains!

The food producers are clearly seeking permission to lie to the consumers. They clearly should not be given this libeerty.

I can handle a couple of stolen elections, a war for profit, and incompetence in the Whitehouse, but if you start screwing around with my food - there will be hell to pay.

With so many unhealthy people in this world, I strive to be one of the healthy ones. I choose organic foods because they are better and healthier for me. Whats the point of having a separate food group called organic if there is going to be artificial foods labeled organic also?? Please do not let this happen. Please keep organic foods organic and non organic foods non organic! Thank you!

This is so stupid. If someone puts fake ingredients into something, then it is no longer considered organic. DUH! Some people care about themselves and what they eat. Everyone says how important it is to eat healthy, and yet they want to go and do something like this. How dumb is that? I mean come on, what is the point of putting fake ingredients into organic food? Please, give me a break!

I think it is very important that we keep our organically grown foods exactly that- organic. I count on organic farmers to keep pesticides and other chemicals out of my organic foods because I don't have the time or, rather, the space to grow my own fruits and vegetables. Nor do I want antibiotics or growth hormones in my chicken and beef. Is it more expensive to eat organic food? Yes. Is it worth it? Absolutely. Would I buy it if Kraft bacame involved? Absolutely not. I'd rather starve. Let's just stop deceiving the consumer and allow us to get what we pay for. I think that is a fair and just system.

If this law goes through it is just another instance of breaking the trust. I'm still dissapointed we, the consumers are not permitted to have knowledge when we are purchasing GMO's. Please don't let us down again. Vote against the tainting of the term "organic". Please allow truth to be truth and not subverted.

We do care if artificial ingredients are put in "100% organic" foods. We buy 100% organic foods because the DON'T have artificial ingredients. Please don't pass this law! Thank you. RBDN

Our legal system permits lawyers to play with words. Only the clearest of language can protect citizens from manipulation. The present wording of the organic food law is clear. Please DO NOT MODIFY IT in favor of adding inorganic elements. You will be serving the American Public best by adding protective language that strengthens rather than diluting the present law.

Words matter. Truth in advertising matters. Do not let corporations lie to the American people. Organic means not artifical. Artificial means not organic. The laws should support the truth. Quit trying to fake us out. Quit legislating lies!

I specifically purchase organic food for my young children based on the understanding that there are no artificial ingredients being used. If this change is made, the label "organic" becomes meaningless. If anything, the use of the term organic should be more closely regulated to protect consumers' interests, not undermine them.

I purchase organically grown food. I do so to keep as many chemicals out of my system as possible. As a cancer survivor, what I put into my body is of great concern to me. Please keep the label of "organic" pure! Do not let food giants, like Kraft and others sway you with their promises of campaign money!

Don't do it. Organic means just that, organic; and artificial ingredients means just that, artificial ingredients. If a product is organic, it doesn't have artificial ingredients in it. Thanks for listening and doing the right thing.

I am so disappointed with food regulation as it is. If this were to happen it would be criminal. I hate the big food com[anies that sell modified and chemically enhanced products. They are the ones spreading cancer and disease in this country. Thsy should be held liable.

The whole purpose of having "Organic Foods" is so people who are very health conscious or who have allergies, can be sure they are buying food that is actually safe. To change the law to allow artificial additives would be to subvert the whold idea of having "organic foods". This tactic is a cheap ploy and will result in people being unable to find food that meets their requirements of safety. Kraft foods should be ashamed of themselves. I will make an effort in the future to avoid buying Kraft products.

If anything, Congress needs to strengthen organic food labeling laws. The synthetic stuff is killing my stomach and the older I get the more sensitive I am to the chemicals. It has even gotten hard for me to eat out because there are so many "hidden" chemicals" in the foods now. Please do NOT allow the food companies to label systhetics as organic! That is farce and FALSE labeling.

The health of consumers and their ability to make informed decisions is infinitely more important than the ability of conglomorates to rape a good trend for profit, and to lie on their packaging.

Organic food should already be a right of every citizen, so it's insane that we even have to have this conversation in the first place. Leave organic food alone! Because many of us actually care about what we put into our bodies.
