Tell Automakers Why You Want Green Cars Today

Target: CEOs of world's six largest automakers, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Nissan, Toyota
Sponsored by: The Center for a New American Dream
The need for fuel-efficient cars has never been greater. With just four percent of the world's population, the United States consumes a quarter of global oil consumption; U.S. passenger vehicles alone guzzle 10 percent of the world's oil! We spent $250 billion on this oil habit last year alone, and as a result we're less secure, more polluted, and economically weaker.

Existing technology such as advanced hybrid engines could dramatically decrease our oil consumption -- if only more automakers would grasp the urgency of the situation and incorporate efficient technology in many more vehicles.

Think about the people, places, and things that would be better off if automakers do their part to help us break our oil dependence and transition to a more sustainable future. Then encapsulate these images into your favorite art form, or just a simple note, and add that to this petition. We'll deliver your comments and images to Detroit and Tokyo. We want Bill Ford, Rick Wagoner, and the other CEOs to truly grasp what's at risk... and to respond.

To: the chief executives of the world's six largest automakers - DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Nissan and Toyota

Dear Automakers,

The attached photos, drawings, poems, and pleas represent the people, places, and things we most treasure who are jeopardized by a "business as usual" approach to energy use. Please pause and deeply consider what is at stake here, then show leadership in publicly committing to bring far more efficient vehicles to market.

Sincerely,

The undersigned
We signed the “Tell Automakers Why You Want Green Cars Today” petition!

The technology is there to make cars that get better gas mileage. As gas prices rise, now is the time to make cars that are better for our environment.

You better start paying more attention to the people who are working on solutions instead of thinking about the cost of switching over to alternative fuels or means of operating transport vehicles. Otherwise the cost in the long run is going to be far greater!

Because gas is too expensive, it is not enviromental friendly, there are better alternatives.

We have the technology, so use it! Myself, I recently acquired an all electric motor scooter for commuting to work and for errands and it only takes me a few minutes longer than using a gas powered vehicle, PLUS IT ONLY COSTS APPROXIMATELY $7 A MONTH TO RUN.

I will never buy a car that's not at least hybrid. If the technology exists, use it! It means less running costs, less pollution and less use of non-renewable resources.

I hope I will never need to drive - but should the necessity arise, it would make me feel awful to waste our limited resources.

Reliance on foreign oil and the subsequent consequences decrease as miles per gallon increase. What more do automakers need to know? Unless oil companies and automakers are conspiring to kill, this should be a no-brainer!

Soon the world's sources of fossil fuels under terrain that could be drilled without an ecological tragedy will be gone. Simple economics dictates that when a commodity is in short supply, the price of it must go up. Gas and diesel should cost Americans $10/gallon now. If we wait till its gone, green cars are the only alternative. GM and Ford get smart. Prepare for this now! One good way to do this is to make it a felony to buy and drive a Humvee.

Internal combustion vehicles are based on Nineteenth century technology, a technology that has proven to be both harmful to our ecology and its fuel to be the cause of current and recent wars. It is also inefficient when compared to alternative fuel vehicles.

My wife and I want our grandchildren -- and yours, too! -- to have at least as much opportunity as we do to enjoy nature and all its varied and wondrous wildlife all over the world. Fortunately for us, we can afford that kind of travel, but no amount of money can replace what has already disappeared or been destroyed. The world simply cannot afford to lose any more of its marvelous creatures or their precious habitat. Global warming will destroy much of life’s habitat. And current cars are a great dcontribution to global warming!

I recently read that polar bears are drowning in the Arctic because of the sea ice melting. I can't bear the thought that my energy use is directly contributing to the deaths of polar bears, penguins, and other arctic animals, not to mention the human lives lost from catastrophic flooding and hurricanes caused or exacerbated by global warming. The technology exists to make cleaner cars, and it is criminal not to do so. Please think about your children and grandchildren, and do the right thing.
