Tell Automakers Why You Want Green Cars Today

Target: CEOs of world's six largest automakers, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Nissan, Toyota
Sponsored by: The Center for a New American Dream
The need for fuel-efficient cars has never been greater. With just four percent of the world's population, the United States consumes a quarter of global oil consumption; U.S. passenger vehicles alone guzzle 10 percent of the world's oil! We spent $250 billion on this oil habit last year alone, and as a result we're less secure, more polluted, and economically weaker.

Existing technology such as advanced hybrid engines could dramatically decrease our oil consumption -- if only more automakers would grasp the urgency of the situation and incorporate efficient technology in many more vehicles.

Think about the people, places, and things that would be better off if automakers do their part to help us break our oil dependence and transition to a more sustainable future. Then encapsulate these images into your favorite art form, or just a simple note, and add that to this petition. We'll deliver your comments and images to Detroit and Tokyo. We want Bill Ford, Rick Wagoner, and the other CEOs to truly grasp what's at risk... and to respond.

To: the chief executives of the world's six largest automakers - DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Nissan and Toyota

Dear Automakers,

The attached photos, drawings, poems, and pleas represent the people, places, and things we most treasure who are jeopardized by a "business as usual" approach to energy use. Please pause and deeply consider what is at stake here, then show leadership in publicly committing to bring far more efficient vehicles to market.

Sincerely,

The undersigned

In such a mobile country as this, where one expends vast volumes of fuel daily, it would be wonderful to have cars that do not have a negative impact on the environment.

Green is certainly better than pollution. Since Bush doesn't believe there's global warming, we need to do all that we can to see the world doesn't get much warmer.

I would like us all to have "green" eco friendly cars for many reasons. One reason being to decrease global warming. I prefer inhaling cleaner air without so much smog. It would also be nice to cut down so much of the oil dependency. If we weren't so dependent on oil, we wouldn't have to keep disrupting nature. Cleaner vehicles mean a cleaner & healthier environment. Less cancers, less environmental accidents, etc. What's the real gamble? Right now we're gambling with the state of our environment and health in such a way that is to make everything non-viable. If you just go ahead and produce a bunch of eco-friendly cars, people will buy them. The environment and quality of life of all living things cannot be measured by a dollar amount. The money won't be worth a thing if there is nothing to enjoy or experience. It would be a win-win situation if you would just start really producing eco-friendly cars and discontinue the old. Where old jobs cease, there will always be some other new task or job to take it's place. We want a greener environment for a better and higher quality of life. We want to go to the oeans and see it bursting with life, and not see black oily sludge wash up with the beaches littered with scattered remains of dead shorebirds and other marine life. We want to see tall green trees in out forests shooting upward not fallen over yellowed, blackened, dry, sick and/or dying vegetation. We would benefit far more as would you if you would just take the plunge in truly moving forward with creating and building more eco-friendly cars and stop cranking out the old. Driving is fun. I've enjoyed it as far as learning to drive and just travelling around over the years. But it cannot continue the way that it has in the form that it has. We are all responsible for the oceans and marine life within it as well as the terrestial animals and environment. You have the ability to make a greater impact on that. Please make the change over to greener cars. If you have children or grandchildren, look to them and think about their health in years to come. The easy money you might be making now with just turning out the old kind of cars won't amount to much if they fall ill with some kind of cancer or other illness...Or if they are suddenly rendered infertile due to all the toxins. Not all the money in the world will make them better at that point. If you happen to respect/care about and/or appreciate the wildlife...Think of the difference it can make to them. I strongly urge you to please push forward with the greener eco-friendly cars for the sake of all.

I'd like automakers to focus on greener cars, especially for the American market, so this administration doesn't try to invade Canada for our oil. :)
